The semifinal clash between East Zone and Central Zone took a dramatic turn, as the Ishan Kishan-led team posted the same score as Rajat Patidar's men in the first innings. After restricting the Central Zone to 266, East Zone had a great start to their innings, with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Abhimanyu Easwaran racking up valiant fifties. 

While Sooryavanshi became the youngest player to score a fifty in the Duleep Trophy, Easwaran compiled 69 runs off 106 deliveries. However, their dismissals in quick succession opened the floodgates for the East Zone, as they were eventually bowled for 266 in 80.1 overs. 

Had East Zone taken a first-innings lead, they would've qualified for the Duleep Trophy final if the match concluded in a draw. However, as the first innings scores of both teams were level, here we explain the Duleep Trophy final qualification after the completion of East Zone's innings.

While the first innings totals of both teams are equal, both East Zone and Central Zone will be keen to assert their dominance in the second innings and register a decisive victory to get an entry into the final. 

However, if, by any means, a Duleep Trophy knockout fixture concludes in a stalemate, the winner will be decided either by comparing the average scores of both teams or by a luck-based coin toss, according to the BCCI documents accessed by CREX. 

The average score for each team will be calculated by dividing their total match runs by wickets lost. The team with a higher average score will proceed to the final. However, it requires the team batting second to bat for at least 60 overs for this rule to come into play.

Therefore, as East Zone were bowled out in 57 overs, the winner of the Duleep Trophy semifinal will be decided by a coin toss if none of the teams secures a conclusive win after the completion of the fourth innings. 

If a coin toss is conducted to decide one of the finalists of the Duleep Trophy 2026, East Zone and Central Zone will have an equal chance to qualify for the ultimate clash. 

When a Duleep Trophy knockout winner was decided by coin toss

The rare incident happened in the first semifinal of the 2013-14 Duleep Trophy edition when North Zone won the tie-breaker toss to qualify for the final, beating East Zone. 

Batting first, the Harbhajan Singh-led North Zone posted a mammoth total of 591 runs for the loss of eight wickets, riding on centuries from Unmukt Chand, Ian Dev Singh, Rajat Paliwal and Nitin Saini. 

In response, East Zone were 32 for one in their first innings before rain and inclement weather conditions in Kochi forced the match officials to abandon the fixture. 

As the contest concluded without either team securing a first-innings lead due to a wet outfield, the winner was decided through a toss, which North Zone skipper Harbhajan Singh won. 

East and Central Zones have everything to play for in Duleep Trophy 2026 semifinal

The East and Central Zones are the two least successful teams in the Duleep Trophy history. While the Central Zone has a win percentage of 27.18, the same for East Zone reads a meagre 20.87, making them statistically the least impactful team among five prominent zones. 

So, East Zone would be desperate to break their title jinx, having won the Duleep Trophy for the last time way back in 2012-13. On the other hand, Rajat Patidar's Central Zone would like to bounce back after bowling out their counterparts in the semifinal and get an entry into the final for the second consecutive time. 

Central Zone are the defending Duleep Trophy champions and a more spirited effort in the second innings will put them in a better position to inch closer to the coveted title.
