Crisis At CSK! Veteran Interested To Join Stephen Fleming In England Team

Chennai Super Kings had another poor IPL campaign, finishing 8th on the points table. Meanwhile, the Men in Yellow have already begun their preparations for IPL 2027. In a significant step, CSK ended their 18-year-long association with Stephen Fleming.

On July 12, 2026, Stephen Fleming stepped down as CSK head coach. The Super Kings failed to qualify for the playoffs in the last three seasons, which is why the management opted to part ways with the New Zealand great, who guided them to five titles during his stint. 

Stephen Fleming Joined England As Head Coach

On July 30, 2026, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) jumped onto the scene and roped in Stephen Fleming to replace Brendon McCullum as their next red-ball head coach. England cricket has also hit rock bottom, and the new job posed a great challenge for Fleming to step out of his comfort zone, which was the IPL.

Notably, Fleming also coached Southern Brave in The Hundred 2023 and powered them to the final. While coaching the England team is a different challenge altogether from guiding an IPL franchise, the New Zealand great has made up his mind to bring in his CSK staff to the ECB.

A report recently mentioned that Stephen Fleming has approached CSK’s batting coach Mike Hussey to join England as their batting coach. 

Mike Hussey Open To England Opportunity

In the latest event, speaking to Fox Sports, Mike Hussey confirmed his interest to join the England coaching set-up, but also maintained a diplomatic stance.

“Fleming and I obviously get on really well and work a lot together. There is a lot of different things to consider. My short answer is I would not say no to anything really,” Hussey told Fox Sports.

It is worth noting that Hussey also served as England's batting consultant during 2022 T20 World Cup and the Three Lions lifted their 2nd T20 World Cup title. 

“It ​would feel a bit weird – definitely – coaching for England against Australia in an Ashes series, no question. I love the coaching side of the game. I love trying to help players get better ​, whether they are Australians, English, South ‌Africans, Pakistan or India or anywhere; it does not bother me,” Hussey added.

Notably, Michael Hussey was roped in as CSK’s batting coach in 2018. Interestingly, Hussey and Fleming did wonders in their first year of collaboration, and Chennai Super Kings lifted their 3rd title. 

Further, the duo went on to win the IPL title on two more occasions, in 2021 and 2023. Therefore, Stephen Fleming wants to work with Mike Hussey again at England to reclaim the lost glory.

Notably, Mike Hussey also heaped massive praise on Stephen Fleming's coaching style.

“He has a very good understanding of the game. Very shrewd operator who gets that balance between enjoyment and fun and relationships. He ⁠has a great chance to do well. He wants to keep the game moving forward but perhaps not as recklessly as England have ‌been recently," Hussey concluded.

Michael Hussey has plethora of coaching experience, having previously worked with Welsh Fire as their head coach.
