Ben Stokes is reportedly eyeing his return to the England cricket team for next year’s Ashes 2027 series. The former captain recently announced his retirement from international cricket, doing so after England’s home series against New Zealand in June this year.

While Stokes’ stepped down from the game mere weeks after his involvement in the nightclub controversy, the 35-year-old has committed himself to play for Durham next year in the 2027 County Championship.

Ben Stokes to ditch IPL 2027, PSL 2027; can return for England if approached

As reported by i Paper, former England captain Ben Stokes has made himself available for 10 County Championship 2027 matches next year for his boyhood club, Durham.

The report also states that the 35-year-old will not make himself available for the PSL 2027 season, considering the league will overlap with the starting phase of the County Championship in April. Moreover, Stokes also has no plans in flying to India for the IPL 2027 season, and he might also skip The Hundred 2027 season in England.

Even though the legendary all-rounder has been exploring franchise opportunities since retiring from England’s international cricket this year, his decision to ditch PSL, IPL, The Hundred next year and his sudden County Championship commitment for Durham indicates that the cricketer is leaving the door ajar for a potential shock return for England in time for the 2027 Ashes series.

Should the national team management approach him for the Ashes, or should close friend and current Test skipper Joe Root persuade him to reconsider his international retirement, Ben Stokes could potentially be tempted into making a dramatic return to the Test arena for one last time for England.

When Ben Stokes reversed his ODI retirement for England

It is worth noting that Ben Stokes has already reversed his ODI retirement for England once in his career, doing so back in 2023 to participate in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup. Making his return at the behest of then skipper Jos Buttler, the cricketer failed to make much impact for his side as England went on to suffer one of the worst title-defense campaigns in World Cup history.

Stokes’ long-time teammate and fellow all-rounder Moeen Ali also once came out of his retirement to play the 2023 Ashes series.

The Ashes series next year is scheduled to commence from June 18 onwards at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. Notably, England has not won a single Ashes series since lifting the 2015 edition at home more than a decade ago.
