BCCI In Panic Mode For India Squad vs Australia, Scheduling Error Changes Everything

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been left to deal with a certain selection dilemma, just a day after announcing India U19 squad for the upcoming fixtures against Australia U19. Interestingly, the two-match series will also coincide with the annual Irani Cup fixture this year.

While the four-day matches between India U19 and Australia U19 will be played from September 27 to October 8 in Rajkot and Ahmedabad, the Irani Cup 2026 match between Jammu and Kashmir and the Rest of India will be played from October 1 to October 5 in Srinagar. 

BCCI left to compromise between Australia series and Irani Cup

BCCI’s scheduling mess could leave the Rest of India team with a depleted squad for its prestigious Irani Cup 2026 fixture against this year’s Ranji Trophy winners, Jammu and Kashmir.

It is worth noting that the Rest of India squad generally features one of the most star-studded Indian first-class ensembles after Team India’s Test side.

However, with the BCCI having already announced an India U19 squad for the coinciding U19 series against Australia, several young players from the U19 group will now be ineligible to play the Irani Cup in Srinagar.

With both series set to coincide with each other in different parts of the country, the BCCI will now have to attempt a balancing act by splitting prominent players between the two Australian fixtures and supplementing both squads with top performers from recent domestic seasons. 

BCCI's domestic scheduling gets questioned

As reported by Sportstar, a source close to the BCCI Centre of Excellence has criticized the board's planning and scheduling for the India U19 vs Australia U19 series, considering the bilateral fixtures are set to clash with the prestigious Irani Cup. 

The CoE insider, who is believed to be closely involved with the scheduling of India U19 fixtures, suggested that the three One-Day games between India and Australia should have been scheduled between the two four-day matches.

In such a way, the BCCI would have been able to elect a full-strength Rest of India squad, considering players from the India U19 first-class side would have had a clear schedule to play the Irani Cup in Srinagar.

BCCI announce India U19 squad, Rest of India pending

On Thursday, August 27, the BCCI unveiled two separate India U19 groups of 15-player squads each for the three-match One-Day and two four-day fixtures against Australia U19.

The men’s selection committee named Aaryavir Sehwag and Anvay Dravid, sons of Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid for the 50-overs series. Yashbardhan Chauhan was named as the captain of the two-match first-class series against the visitors. 

With plans already in place for the Australia U19 series, the BCCI might have to compromise on the composition of the Rest of India squad to accommodate the scheduling overlap with the series against Australia.
