The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) could soon make an important decision regarding the leadership of India’s T20I team. Although Suryakumar Yadav is expected to continue as captain for now, reports suggest that the team management is already looking at possible future replacements
Notably, Suryakumar Yadav became India’s T20I captain after the team won the 2024 T20 World Cup. He replaced Rohit Sharma as India started preparing for a new era in T20 cricket. Since then, Suryakumar Yadav has played a major role in India’s plans and has led the side with confidence.'
Suryakumar Likely To Continue for Now
Despite rumours about leadership changes, Suryakumar Yadav is likely to captain India in the upcoming T20I series against Ireland and England. The selectors and team management still trust his experience and leadership qualities.
Notably, after India’s T20 World Cup triumph, the Men in Blue will begin their new T20 campaign with a series against Ireland. India are scheduled to play a two-match T20I series against Ireland in June 2026, with both matches set to be held at the Civil Service Cricket Club (Stormont) in Belfast.
Suryakumar Yadav's Performance In IPL 2026
However, there are concerns about his recent performances, especially in the ongoing IPL 2026 season. Playing for the Mumbai Indians, the 35-year-old batter has struggled with the bat. In 11 matches, he has scored only 210 runs at an average of 17.50. Although his strike rate of 148.94 remains decent, his overall form has disappointed experts.
Even so, the Indian team management is not ready to move away from him immediately. They still believe that Suryakumar Yadav is a proven match-winner who can perform well for the national team.
Notably, India are already preparing for the next T20 cycle, and the management wants stability and long-term planning. Because of this, the search for a future captain has become more serious.
There is also uncertainty regarding the Asian Games squad, as the BCCI has not yet decided whether a full-strength Indian team will participate in the tournament.
