With just two days left for the start of IPL 2026, excitement among fans is at its peak. The tournament will begin on March 28 with defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru taking on Sunrisers Hyderabad at the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

So far, the BCCI has released only the initial set of fixtures. The remaining schedule is expected to be announced soon after election-related formalities are done.

As the opening game approaches, discussions have started on traditional pre-match celebrations. Over the years, IPL opening ceremonies have been known for their grand performances and star-studded line-ups.

However, this year, uncertainty looms over whether such a ceremony will take place. Reports suggest that the Devajit Saikia's BCCI and the IPL Governing Council have been carefully considering their approach before the season opener in Bengaluru.

BCCI decides to skip Opening ceremony for IPL 2026

In a significant development, the BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has decided not to hold the opening ceremony for IPL 2026

The move has been taken to show respect and sensitivity towards the victims of the tragic stampede in Bengaluru, during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s maiden title celebrations.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that there will be no cultural or entertainment programme before the opening match as a mark of tribute to those who lost their lives (as per TOI).

"Due to last year's tragic incident on June 4 last year, there will be no formal function on the day of the start of IPL-2026 (in Bengaluru). The BCCI is not organizing any cultural or entertainment show at the start of IPL-19 as a mark of respect to the departed souls due to that tragedy on June 4, 2025" Devajit Saikia told TOI.

What happened in RCB's tragic stampede in Bengaluru?

In a recent development, the RCB has announced a series of heartfelt tributes to honour the 11 fans who lost their lives in the tragic stampede that followed the team's historic IPL victory last year. The incident occurred on June 4, 2025, outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium during RCB's first-ever IPL title celebrations.

What began as a moment of joy quickly turned into chaos as an overwhelming crowd, estimated at 2 to 3 lakh people, gathered around the stadium.

Confusion over event details made matters worse. While city traffic police had earlier stated that no victory parade would be held, social media posts from RCB hinted at celebrations and limited free passes. This led to a surge of fans trying to enter the stadium.

As the IPL 2026 season begins, RCB and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) have taken meaningful steps to remember the victims.

In an emotional gesture, 11 seats in a premium stand at the stadium have been permanently left empty. These seats will remain unoccupied during all matches. “This is a tribute to our fans, who will always remain a part of our journey,” said RCB CEO Rajesh Menon.

Additionally, players will wear jersey number 11 during warm-ups and black armbands during their opening match, showing solidarity and respect.

IPL 2026 Grand Closing ceremony on the cards

While the IPL 2026 opening ceremony has reportedly been cancelled, fans can still expect a big celebration at the end of the season. The BCCI is planning a grand closing ceremony on May 31 (IPL 2026 final date).

This move ensures that the league maintains its celebratory spirit while also showing responsibility and respect.
