In a significant development, the Bangladesh Cricket Board has clarified the role umpire Simon Taufel in the Bangladesh Premier League, following questions about a potential conflict of interest.

During the most recent BPL 2025-26 season, Simon Taufel served in more than one capacity, including acting as a match referee and providing guidance to the BPL Technical Committee.

The matter was addressed by Iftekhar Rahman Mithu, Chairman of the BCB Umpires Committee and Member Secretary of the BPL Governing Council.

BCB clarifies Simon Taufel’s role in BPL

Speaking to the media, Mithu said there was no conflict of interest and stressed that Taufel’s primary responsibility in Bangladesh is as an advisor.

"Simon Taufel has been appointed as a consultant for umpire training," Mithu said. "He is a highly experienced official with seven years at the top level. He assisted the Technical Committee only as a volunteer advisor and did not receive any payment for that role. He is not a formal member of the committee."

Mithu explained that Taufel volunteered to assist the Technical Committee whenever his expertise was needed.

According to him, seeking advice from experienced professionals without involving them in decision-making bodies is a common practice in cricket administration.

Addressing the concerns in depth, Mithu pointed out that similar dual roles had existed in the BPL in the past without any controversy.

He mentioned that former cricketer Raqibul Hasan served both as a match referee and a member of the BPL Technical Committee between 2018 and 2024.

“This is not something new, Raqibul Hasan served as both a match referee and a Technical Committee member between 2018 and 2024," Mithu said.

Shortage of experienced referees forced BPL to seek Taufel’s help

Mithu also explained why Taufel was appointed as a match referee during the tournament. He said the BPL faced a serious shortage of experienced match referees at the time.

“We had only four match referees available: Sejan, Selim, Neeyamur Rashid Rahul and Shiper,” Mithu said.

"Each match requires two referees. Sejan was appointed as the Under-19 team manager, Rahul was in Africa for the U19 World Cup, and Selim was on Umrah. At that level of tournament, experienced referees are essential."

Because of these limitations, the BCB asked Taufel to step in as a match referee. Mithu said bringing in an elite-level referee from outside would have been far more expensive.

"If we brought in an elite match referee, the cost would be no less than USD 4,000,” he explained. “We had no alternative, so we requested Taufel. He was paid only for his role as a match referee. On paper, he remains an advisor, and we seek his guidance whenever necessary."

Why did BCB appoint Taufel for multiple roles?

It is important to mention that, in addition to officiating in several BPL matches, Taufel also conducted a two-day workshop for local match referees.

The workshop focused on improving decision-making, match management, and understanding international standards.

Simon Taufel was appointed by the BCB as a two-year consultant to help raise the standards of umpires and match referees in Bangladesh.
