The Bangladesh Women’s cricket team is enjoying a dream run in the ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers 2026 in Nepal. After topping the Group A stage with four comprehensive wins in four matches, the Nigar Sultana-led side also trounced Thailand Women in Super Six stage of the competition.
Bangladesh’s unbeaten run even helped them secure a place in this year’s 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England. Young spinner Rabeya Khan, who played a key role in Bangladesh’s wins over Namibia and USA earlier this month, has now credited captain Nigar Sultana for team’s recent resurgence after undergoing a forgettable 2025 ODI World Cup campaign in India last year.
Rabeya Khan says players share a “great understanding” with captain Nigar Sultana
In a video shared by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), Bangladesh all-rounder Rabeya Khan praised captain Nigar Sultana for fostering a positive and supportive environment within the squad. She added that the skipper supports team regardless of the situation, and constantly motivates her troops before and after matches.
Rabeya Khan further stated that players also support Nigar Sultana whenever she faces a tough time.
The 20-year-old said, “Joty apa supports us all the time whether the situation is difficult or comfortable. She constantly boosts us before and after matches. We share a great understanding with her. She’s very supportive and inspires us a lot, and whenever she faces a tough time, we also try our best to support her.”
Nigar Sultana’s captaincy career
Nigar Sultana, who made her international debut back in January 2025, has nearly spent half her Bangladesh career as captain of the national side. She was first appointed as Bangladesh Women’s team captain back in 2021.
To date, the star wicketkeeper-batter has led the Bangladesh Women’s team in 44 ODI matches out of the 65 she has played so far. In the 114 times she has turned up for Bangladesh in T20Is, the 28-year-old has led the team in 63 of those matches.
Nigar Sultana is also Bangladesh’s most successful skipper in history, in terms of number of wins. She has led her team to 14 wins in ODIs, and another 24 in T20Is to notch up 38 wins as skipper, thus finding herself seven wins ahead of second-placed Salma Khatun.
Under her leadership, the Bangladesh Women’s team also qualified for the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England, achieving the feat earlier this week alongside Netherlands.
What’s next for Bangladesh Women’s team
After their match against Scotland Women on Friday, January 30 at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur, the Bangladesh team will face Netherlands a couple of days later on February 1.
The match will be hosted by the Mulpani Cricket Ground in Mulpani and the action will commence from 8:45 AM IST onwards. The match marks the penultimate Super Six fixture of the tournament. While Bangladesh and Netherlands have already qualified for the 2026 T20 World Cup, two slots are still up for grabs for the showpiece event.
