KKR slumped to a last-over defeat against Mumbai Indians at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium to start off their IPL 2026 season on a dismal note. However, one of the major talking points of the match was neither Mumbai Indians’ opening partnership nor Shardul Thakur’s sublime spell, but rather the decision to not utilize KKR’s multi-million buy Cameron Green with the ball.

After the match, KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane attributed the decision to Cricket Australia, stating that Green was not permitted to bowl. The Australian board, in response, clarified that the all-rounder is still recovering from a lower back injury.

The situation further gained traction after Kevin Pietersen weighed in on the issue, adding to the growing debate around Green’s utilization.

Kevin Pietersen targets Cricket Australia, backs KKR

Former England captain Kevin Pietersen has targeted Cricket Australia for not allowing Cameron Green to bowl for the KKR franchise in the ongoing IPL 2026 season. The cricketer-turned-commentator took to X and implied that KKR deserves Green at his maximum potential for the price they paid at the IPL 2026 auction a few months ago.

Kevin Pietersen wrote “If KKR knew Green wasn’t allowed to bowl and paid that price for a batter, then it’s ok. That’s their call. If they bought an allrounder and now he’s not allowed to bowl, that’s NOT ok!”

What did Ajinkya Rahane say about Cameron Green’s bowling?

KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane acknowledged his team’s shortcoming against hosts Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, March 29. While speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony, the senior Indian pro was also asked why he did not employed Cameron Green even for a single over.

Rahane responded “that’s the question you need to ask to Cricket Australia.”

When can Cameron Green return to bowling?

Responding to the KKR skipper, a Cricket Australia spokesperson issued an official clarification about Cameron Green’s current unavailability from bowling. Addressing the injury he suffered during the recently-concluded 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka, the official said “Cameron has a lower back injury, which is being managed but requires him to abstain from bowling for a short period.”

The official further added that the board wants to manage Green’s workload for the time being, and the star all-rounder can promptly return to bowling within the next 10-12 days.

Why is Green’s non-bowling a big talking point?

Cameron Green shattered numerous records at the IPL 2026 auction late last year. The cricketer was roped in by the KKR for a staggering sum of Rs. 25.20 crores, making him the most expensive overseas player and the third most expensive player in the history of the IPL.

It is only valid that the KKR franchise expects to utilise him as a genuine all-rounder and extract full value from such a significant investment. With his bowling currently off the table, the imbalance has only amplified scrutiny as KKR looks to return back to winning ways after their IPL 2026 opening disaster.
