Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru are among the strongest teams in IPL 2026 so far. RCB are currently placed third on the points table with 12 points despite a recent defeat against Gujarat Titans.

However, amid RCB's strong season, young England batter Jacob Bethell has unexpectedly become one of the major talking points of the tournament.

The 22-year-old has struggled for consistent opportunities in the playing XI because of RCB’s settled overseas combination featuring players like Phil Salt and Tim David.

His limited game time sparked a debate between Alastair Cook and Kevin Pietersen over whether Bethell should remain in the IPL or return to county cricket.

Alastair Cook Advised Bethell To Return To County Cricket

The controversy began when Alastair Cook suggested that Jacob Bethell should leave the IPL temporarily and play County Championship cricket for Warwickshire. Cook believed regular match practice in red-ball cricket would help the youngster strengthen his position in England’s Test side.

Cook pointed out that Bethell had already experienced the IPL environment over the last two seasons and now needed more time in the middle rather than sitting on the bench.

Jacob Bethell And Kevin Pietersen Defend The IPL Experience

Kevin Pietersen strongly disagreed with Alastair Cook’s view and publicly backed Jacob Bethell’s decision to stay in India.

Pietersen argued that simply being around elite players in a high-pressure tournament like the IPL can help a young cricketer grow mentally and technically.

In a post on social media, Kevin Pietersen said Cook had 'no idea' what it feels like to be part of the IPL because he never played in the tournament himself.

Jacob Bethell later made similar thoughts while speaking on Sky Sports. The youngster admitted that he had learnt a great deal despite limited opportunities on the field.

"I don’t think there’s a right or wrong way to do it," Bethell said. “You only understand how special the IPL environment is when you are actually part of it. Even the net sessions here feel more intense than many matches elsewhere."

Alastair Cook Sparks New Controversy Over Bethell

The debate took another dramatic turn when Alastair Cook responded to Pietersen on the 'Stick to Cricket' podcast and made fresh comments about the IPL itself.

Cook clarified that he respected both sides of the argument but insisted that there comes a point at which players need game time rather than only observing from the sidelines.

“I get the other argument about learning, but there’s got to be a stage where you have to play. You can’t just learn,” Cook said.

The former England captain then delivered a statement that has created major discussion.

“I know the IPL’s a great tournament, but no one is ever publicly going to say the IPL is not the place to be because everyone knows it lines their pockets,” Cook stated.

He further added, "IPL is not quite as good as everyone thinks it is. No one ever says it’s terrible because they don’t want to upset their bosses if they want another contract."

Jacob Bethell’s IPL 2026 So Far

It is important to note that Jacob Bethell has played only three matches for RCB this season. The left-handed batter has scored 39 runs at a strike rate of 150.00.

Retained by the franchise for ₹2.60 crore after their 2025 title-winning season, Bethell is playing as a temporary cover for injured opener Phil Salt.
