This is Anirudh Modi signing off along with my colleagues Saptak Sanyal, Dev Rajawat, and Zeeshan Naiyer! See you at the next one!
Hayley Matthews (West Indies Women Captain): "Pretty disappointed to get a 101, below par, but a different surface to bat on. However, we put Sri Lanka Women under pressure in the final overs, and a different surface could have contributed to more runs.

With someone like Chamari at the crease, they were able to get off to a good start and batted at the best time in the powerplay. We kept it tight at the other end, but they batted well in the first 6 overs, and that took the game away from us.

We need to score more runs, we speak about adapting to different surfaces, the experienced players need to find the runs in the next game."
Chamari Athapaththu (Sri Lanka Women Captain): "(You were batting on a different pitch it seemed!) Actually I executed my plans rightly at right times. I just played my natural game. I love this format specially. In the last three-four games, I was not in my form.

(On her role as a spinner in this team) My role is to bowl sometimes in death overs and sometimes in the first six overs. We have good spinners. My role is most importantly to bowl dot balls. I am not a big turner of the ball. So I attack the stumps.

(On the batting collapse) Actually after losing my wicket, our line-up struggled a bit as the leg spinner Fletcher bowled well. Off spinners also did well. We didn't execute the plans and did not rotate the strike. We lost a couple of wickets but finally Kavisha and Vishmi finished on a high note.

(What was the plan when you came to chase) We planned about how to bat in the middle overs and in the powerplay. We ticked the first box but missed a couple of boxes today."
Player of the Match: Chamari Athapaththu

1:50 AM IST, 4:20 PM Local Time | Sri Lanka Women make hard work of this chase but manage to win the game by 4 wickets. Far from the comfortable victory they would have hoped for at the halfway mark, but they get the job done to take a 1-0 lead in this T20I series.

Sri Lanka Women won the toss and elected to bowl first! Thanks to some excellent bowling led by Malki Madara (3/16) and Nilakshi de Silva (3/20), they were able to bowl out the hosts for 101 runs in 20 overs. Hayley Matthews was the top scorer for West Indies Women with 28 runs off 36 balls, and apart from her, only 3 other batters entered the double digits.

Come the chase, Chamari Athapaththu and Hasini Perera came out all guns blazing, smashing 62 runs for the opening wicket, and bringing Sri Lanka Women to within 40 runs of victory. However, once Fletcher and Matthews dismissed them respectively, things got tougher and tougher for the Lankans.

Dulani played a shocker of an innings with just 2 runs off 16 balls, and the wickets started to fall in quick succession, with not many runs being scored. Harshitha Samarawickrama (5) and Nilakshi de Silva (3) fell under dot ball pressure, and for a moment it seemed like West Indies Women could pull off a miracle here.

However, Hayley Matthews' error to give away 2 boundaries at the start of the 18th over meant Sri Lanka Women were saved by their blushes. Kavisha Dilhari stood tall towards the end with an unbeaten 18 runs off 13 balls to help Sri Lanka Women avoid embarrassment and score a crucial victory by 4 wickets.

Afy Fletcher was the pick of the bowlers for the Windies with 2/16 from 4 overs. Qiana Joseph picked up 2/13 from 2.1 overs, but despite their best efforts, Sri Lanka Women managed to crawl over the line.

Both teams will be disappointed with the effort put in today by their batters, and both will need to go back and iron out the chinks in their armory to come back stronger in the next game.

1 THERE'S THE WINNING RUN! Sri Lanka Women go 0-1 up in this T20I series. A short ball outside off. Dilhari rides the bounce and slashes it over cover point for a single. Their potential victory was denied by rain yesterday but they are victorious today.
