The BCCI has a couple of designated spin bowling options, with Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakaravarthy being there for India’s World Cup 2027 squad. However, Ravi Bishnoi, of late, seems to be raising his stock to bid for his position for the upcoming mega event.

With only 15 members supposed to be there in India’s World Cup 2027 squad, apart from perhaps three reserves, it is obvious that all three – Kuldeep, Varun and Bishnoi – can not be there in the main roster for the Men in Blue.

The obvious reason is mainly due to the fact that South Africa, where pacers get more opportunities to shine, along with Namibia and Zimbabwe, will host the World Cup 2027.

Nevertheless, Bishnoi, if things do not go south in the near future, appears to have secured his place, at least as of now.

In the ongoing India tour of Zimbabwe 2026, Bishnoi returned excellent figures of 1/24 off his four overs, followed by 1/20 in the second T20I. His extremely impressive spells helped Shreyas Iyer and his boys to secure a much-needed T20I series victory, particularly after what had just happened in Ireland and England.

Even though Bishnoi has only played one ODI for India, which came in Lucknow against South Africa back in 2022, he can be fast-tracked soon in the 50-over format of the game to cement his place in India’s World Cup 2027 squad.

Bishnoi has already done well in T20Is in South Africa and Namibia, the co-hosts of the upcoming ODI World Cup event. This automatically gives him an edge to make the cut.

Kuldeep Yadav Having A Rough 2026

Besides, Kuldeep Yadav, India’s go-to spinner in the previous two ODI World Cups, is having a challenging time with the ball in 2026. He was well below his lofty standards in IPL 2026, where he played for Delhi Capitals.

However, Kuldeep will play for Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2027, as part of a blockbuster trade deal involving Rishabh Pant going the other way.

Adding to that, Kuldeep has not been going upwards in 2026 for India either. In ODIs and T20Is, he appears to have lost his confidence these days, making himself doubtful for a secured place in World Cup 2027.

Recent injury concerns around Varun Chakaravarthy

However, in 2026, Varun has failed to deliver on big stages. He performed well in the T20 World Cup 2026 group stage, but could not do wonders from the Super 8 stage onwards.

Even in IPL 2026, he had a tale of two halves for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), a below-par show during the first half of the competition and an improved show later.

In between, Varun Chakaravarthy had sustained a hairline fracture in the middle of IPL 2026. After that, he sustained a hamstring injury during the recently concluded India tour of England.

Thus, a poor run of form when it matters the most, coupled with frequent injury woes, makes him not so reliable a designated spin option for India’s World Cup 2027 squad.

Conclusion

At present, it is safe to say that Bishnoi is currently ahead of Kuldeep and Varun for the guaranteed place in India’s World Cup 2027 squad.

However, things can change really quickly, and Kuldeep has a knack for coming back on the track when everyone writes him off.

Still, Bishnoi has done his bit so far, at least for a place in the squad, if not in India playing XI for World Cup 2027 matches.
