Rajasthan Royals IPL 2026 Squad Analysis [Source: AFP]
The IPL 2026 is all set to begin on March 28, with RCB taking on SRH in the season opener. Talking about the Rajasthan Royals, the inaugural season champions will kickoff their journey with a cracking contest against Chennai Super Kings at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati on the 30th.
RR witnessed radical changes to their leadership group ahead of the 2026 IPL season. While Sanju Samson was traded to CSK, the Royals boosted their all-rounders' department by acquiring Sam Curran, Ravindra Jadeja and Donovan Ferreira.
Kumar Sangakkara replaced Rahul Dravid as the head coach, with Riyan Parag filling the giant shoes of Sanju Samson as the RR captain.
Jointly led by Parag and Samson, RR finished the IPL 2025 as the bottom-sitters, claiming ninth position with four wins in 14 matches.
As they eye redemption, here we analyse the Rajasthan Royals IPL 2026 squad to determine their strengths, weaknesses, likely playing XI and expected finish in the competition.

Strengths of Rajasthan Royals for IPL 2026
Destructive openers
| Criterion | Data |
| Innings | 7 |
| Runs | 422 |
| Average | 60.28 |
| 50s/100s | 3/1 |
(Jaiswal and Suryavanshi's record as RR opening pair)
The batting duo of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Suryavanshi is perhaps the most destructive opening pair in the IPL. Both these batters can torment the opponent with scintillating stroke-play, having proved their mettle in the tournament.
Statistically, Jaiswal has amassed 2166 IPL runs for Rajasthan Royals at a strike rate of 152.86, while his opening partner Vaibhav Suryavanshi had a standout IPL season last year, scoring 252 runs at a strike rate of 206.56.
Apart from taking the advantage of the field restrictions, these two batters can dominate all types of spin bowling, thus posing severe threat to the opposition.
Therefore, the opening pair of Jaiswal and Suryavanshi is undoubtedly the biggest strength of the Rajasthan Royals IPL 2026 squad.
Proven all-round options with international experience
The absence of proven all-rounders has been a major concern for the Royals over the years. Although they invested heavily in Jason Holder and Wanindu Hasaranga, the veteran players disappointed them with middling returns.
So, the RR think tank's decision to rope in Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to the Rajasthan Royals IPL 2026 squad through a historic trade with CSK could work wonders for them this season.
Jadeja and Curran have been proven match-winners in the IPL. While Ravindra Jadeja has scored 3260 runs and bagged 170 wickets in the IPL, Curran was a prolific performer for Punjab Kings.
In fact, Curran has been impressive in T20 cricket of late, amassing 1906 runs and scalping 65 wickets since 2025.

As these two players bring international experience to the table and can be really handy with bat and ball, their addition to the Rajasthan Royals IPL 2026 squad certainly adds flexibility and quality to the RR lineup.
Weaknesses of Rajasthan Royals for IPL 2026
Death bowling
| Bowlers | Economy rate |
| Jofra Archer | 10.27 |
| Sandeep Sharma | 10.82 |
| Sam Curran | 11.25 |
| Tushar Deshpande | 11.93 |
| Kwena Maphaka | 17 |
(RR pacers in death overs in IPL)
There are plenty of bowling options in the Rajasthan Royals IPL 2026 squad. However, the inaugural season champions have some definite chinks in the armour as far as their death bowling is concerned.
None of the RR seamers has a good record in the final phase of the game. Although Sam Curran can be a good option in the slog overs, he will need assistance from his colleagues, especially Jofra Archer (death overs economy - 12.52 in IPL 2025) and Sandeep Sharma (death overs economy - 12.39 in IPL 2025), to control the flow of runs.
Opportunities for Rajasthan Royals ahead of IPL 2026
To prove their mettle in Sanju Samson's absence
Sanju Samson scripted history when he became the second captain after Shane Warne to lead RR to an IPL final. Although his troops lost the ultimate clash to Gujarat Titans, the Kerala cricketer received massive applause for his leadership qualities.
So, with Sanu Samson joining CSK, the Royals lost a key senior member of their leadership group.
The captaincy burden was kept on the young shoulders of Riyan Parag, who'll be leading a young team, comprising several enthusiastic cricketers, as the full-time skipper for the first time.
Therefore, the Rajasthan Royals IPL 2026 squad members have a golden opportunity to prove themselves in Samson's absence and break their title drought after 18 years.
Threats for Rajasthan Royals ahead of IPL 2026
Riyan Parag's captaincy
Although RR head coach Kumar Sangakkara finalised Riyan Parag as Sanju Samson's successor, the former's dismal captaincy record could be a major threat to the Royals' IPL campaign.
Riyan Parag has led RR in eight matches, managing only two wins in the IPL. While he has the potential to succeed as a leader, his past records might play in his mind and keep him under pressure to repay the faith and deliver the goods.
Role clarity of certain players
While there are a number of match-winners in the Rajasthan Royals IPL 2026 squad, all they need is role clarity to make an impact in the tournament.
For instance, Shimron Hetmyer, who bats up the order for the West Indies, has blown hot and cold as a finisher for RR in the last two seasons (352 runs, average- 22). It's still unclear whether the Royals will persist with Hetmyer at the lower middle order or promote him up the order to maximise his spin-hitting prowess.
Even if they promote Hetmyer, the roles of Dhruv Jurel, Sam Curran and Ravindra Jadeja may get compromised, as none of these batters give enough confidence as a finisher lower down the order.
Thus, although Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal form a formidable opening pair, the lack of role clarity could certainly affect the Royals' performance as a batting unit in the IPL.
