The Netherlands have once again qualified for the T20 World Cup, their 6th consecutive appearance in the tournament. They qualified through the European Qualifiers, beating first-time participants Italy in the final to confirm their tickets to India and Sri Lanka.
They are part of a strong Group A, consisting of the defending champions and the hosts India, alongside the 2009 winner Pakistan and fellow associates the United States of America and Namibia.
Notably, the Dutch have reached India well ahead of the tournament and set up a training camp each in Mumbai and Chennai, where they got used to the conditions and also played practice matches against the Chennai Super Kings Academy. Furthermore, they face Zimbabwe and Australia in the warm-up games ahead of the competition.
Their group-stage fixtures are as follows:
- February 7: Netherlands vs Pakistan, Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo.
- February 10: Netherlands vs Namibia, Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi.
- February 13: Netherlands vs USA, MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.
- February 18: Netherlands vs India, Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
Netherlands squad for T20 World Cup 2026
Scott Edwards (c), Colin Ackermann, Noah Croes, Bas de Leede, Aryan Dutt, Fred Klaassen, Kyle Klein, Michael Levitt, Zach Lion-Cachet, Max O'Dowd, Logan van Beek, Timm van der Gugten, Roelof van der Merwe, Paul van Meekeren, Saqib Zulfiqar.
Strengths of the Netherlands
1. T20 World Cup experience
The Dutch first qualified for the T20 mega event back in 2009 and reappeared in 2014. Since the 2014 edition, they have been a mainstay in the tournament, playing in 2016, 2021, 2022, 2024 and now in 2026. Hence, most of their squad members have enough experience at this stage.
This experience at the T20 World Cup stage is crucial for them not to get overwhelmed by the occasion and do something special. Logan van Beek is their most capped player in the tournament with 20 appearances.
2. All-rounders
Netherlands are a unit full of multi-faceted players. Apart from their premier bowlers, the top-6 batters can also roll their arm according to the situation and need and provide crucial breakthroughs. Additionally, they can bat deep, with someone like Roelof van der Merwe slotted at number 8.
3. Flexible batting order
Apart from good openers in Max O'Dowd and Michael Levitt, who will play all their matches at the top, they have a flexible batting order, where they can back any of their number 3 to 6 batters to bat anywhere as per the team's requirements.
For instance, captain Scott Edwards is a number 4 player but was seen batting at 3 in the qualifiers, similar to the likes of Biag Croes and Colin Ackerman. Bas de Leede is also capable of doing some special things batting at 4-6 in the second half of the innings.
Weaknesses of the Netherlands
1. Inexperienced spinners
One of the biggest misses in their squad is the very impressive Tim Pringle, who is known for his miserly bowling. While their overall squad has some old-timers, among the spinners, only van der Merwe stands out as someone who has a considerable number of games under his belt at the top level.
Leg-spinner Saqib Zulfiqar has only bowled in 8 T20Is, picking 4 wickets, and Aryan Dutt has played over 50 ODIs, including the 2023 World Cup, but has only featured in 26 T20Is at 22. The only other option remains Colin Ackerman, who can bowl off-breaks.
2. Lack of X-factor
On paper, the Dutch are a formidable and well-rounded unit, which covers all bases and can go up against most teams on their day. However, their best playing XI misses a player who can single-handedly take the game by the scruff of its neck and leave the opponents clueless.
Opportunities for the Netherlands
1. Ruin Pakistan's tournament
In 2024, Pakistan faced a defeat at the hands of the hosts, the USA, in the group stages of the competition. On the other hand, the Netherlands almost pulled off an upset against South Africa in a thrilling match of the other group. This time around, after Pakistan have boycotted the India match, a win against them could ruin the tournament for the former champions.
2. Outside chance of a historic second-round qualification
Unlike the 2024 edition of the tournament, where the Netherlands had South Africa, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in their group, they only face India and Pakistan among the full members in 2026. Wins over Namibia and the USA, and a potential upset against one of Pakistan (more likely) or India could take them to the Super 8 for the first-time ever.
Threats for the Netherlands
1. Travel fatigue
The Netherlands are scheduled to travel slightly longer distances in the middle of their matches, flying from Colombo to Delhi (2395 km), Delhi to Chennai (1760 km), and Chennai to Ahmedabad (1839 km) for their respective games.
All these locations are at different corners on the India-Sri Lanka maps, and travelling across that distance and climatic conditions in 10 days could take a toll on players' bodies by the time they play India.
2. Heat-related complications
The Europeans, who come from relatively colder climatic conditions, could suffer from cramps and dehydration, especially during the day match against Pakistan in Colombo and against Namibia in Delhi. While they have trained in India for over a month now, how their bodies react during matches in hot and humid conditions will be crucial to them.
