Marnus Labuschagne vs Kurtis Patterson- Numbers vs Narrative? A Statistical Examination

Cricket Australia (CA) on Monday left many stunned by retaining Marnus Labuschagne in Australia’s squad for South Africa Tests. More significantly, they kept him without having a like-for-like backup, such as a proven Kurtis Patterson.

Patterson, now 33 years old, was reportedly on the verge of returning to Australia’s Test setup after more than seven years. There were two reasons CA gave him hope: one was his extraordinary form at No. 3, and the other was Labuschagne's miserable downfall, with failures one after another.

Yet CA backed out of their initial plan to bring Patterson in straightaway to Australia’s Test setup. Were they right? What do the numbers suggest, or was bringing in Patterson just a narrative of a certain group? Let’s take a deeper look at the subject.

Marnus Labuschagne’s Year-By-Year Decline In Tests

At one point, there were hopes that Marnus Labuschagne would finish as one of the greatest ever Test batters of all time. Within five years of making his Test debut in 2018, he had 10 centuries in red-ball cricket, along with 13 fifties.

But then, the downfall began in 2023. And since then, every time he fails, the debate arises regarding whether he has had enough opportunity to shut down the critics. On paper, the timeline is long, and historically, Australia do not give much of a chance to an individual who fails to deliver in a consistent manner.

Kurtis Patterson Still Has Work To Do

Patterson, captaining Australia XI, made 53 in the recently played warm-up Test match against Bangladesh. He got an opportunity to shine once and made full use of it, that too, after coming to bat at No. 3, Marnus’s most suited position.

The narrative emerged from there: Whether Australia have been wasting Patterson by keeping him sidelined while backing Marnus? However, it does not seem to be the no-brainer case.

Last year, Patterson was in full-fledged action during the Sheffield Shield, Australia’s primary red-ball competition for domestic players. Playing for New South Wales, despite having two centuries, he could only average 36.41 after 20 innings.

Yes, Marnus has averaged 24.69 in his last 43 Test innings, but that does not make Patterson an immediate, obvious replacement for him.

Sheffield Shield 26-27 will begin on October 7, and Australia’s three-match Test series will get underway on October 9. Thus, it is certain that Australia want to see whether Patterson can be extremely consistent with the bat this time around.

At the same time, Marnus, who is yet to travel to South Africa for Tests, will get his opportunity to improve his Test numbers. In fact, Marnus might get all three matches to perform, with Australia potentially picking Cooper Connolly as a cover for Beau Webster.
