That is it then from Match 5! Phillips, in his potential final appearance for the Volts this season, has gifted them a win with pure genius. The Super Smash is showing us incredible things day after day, and it is a non-stop Kiwi carnival. The action returns tomorrow. Northern Brave will be taking on the Wellington Firebirds at Mount Manganui!
On that note, I, Manan Mehta would like to take your leave on behalf of my colleagues Deepak Prakash and Asraj Khan! See yaaa!!!
Glenn Phillips (POTM): "Yeah, it was a really good outing. A couple of partnerships set things up nicely, and we went through a small rebuild in the middle before finishing strongly. The boys were incredible. We’ve spoken a lot about being specific with our fields, and they executed that really well today. Luke Georgeson was excellent up front, which really slowed the flow of runs and did great things for us. We also talked about using plenty of slower balls, and the way the bowlers stuck to their plans was outstanding. That level of clarity and execution is exactly what we’re looking for, and it was great to see them get their rewards. It all comes down to that specificity. The group is learning quickly, and we’ve got a great bunch of players — plenty of power, strong bowling, and everyone giving everything in the field. That gives us a lot to build on.
(Plans before traveling to India) I might try to get into the mountains for a bit of rest, maybe get a flight or two in — that would be nice."
Player of the Match: Glenn Phillips
12:15 PM IST and 7:45 PM Local Time: Otago Volts win by 41 runs! That is a thunderous win for the Otago Volts here in Alexandra! They have dominated their opposition in all departments. With this win, they lift themselves from the bottom of the table and manage to bag a win before 2025 ends.
The Otago Volts won the toss and elected to bat first. Their openers gave them the perfect start. In 4 overs they were flying at 47/1. They did lose Llew Johnson, but he did his bit in the first 3 overs. Soon the second opener, in Jamal Todd also got out for 32 off 16. But the scoring rate was kept high with Max Chu striking a few in the stands early on.
The Stags managed to pull things back a tad, but the Volts were ahead at 94/3 in 10 overs. That is when the Stags applied some serious breaks with their spinners bowling fabulous lengths. In the next 5 overs, the Volts could only muster 35 runs and lost two wickets as well. They were losing all momentum at 129/5 in 15 overs.
That is when their international pro Glenn Phillips stepped on the gas and played an absolute innings of genius. He took down anything lose and then just took his craft to a different level. When he realized, he was struggling to hit the left arm spinner batting right-handed, he switched hands. He smashed a six and four batting left-handed. Eventually Phillips finished the innings on 90* off 48 balls. The Volts finished with 193/7 which was a fantastic first innings score. The pick of the bowlers for the Stags was Ajaz Patel (2-30).
The chase started on a good note for the Stags. Their international pro Will Young was finding the boundaries regularly and tonked some eye-catching sixes as well. The raced to 54/1 in just 6overs. That is when the first big blow came their way as Young hit one down the fielder's throat.
Dane Cleaver and Dean Foxcroft brought some stability back in the chase. They were rotating the strike and finding regular boundaries. The score was pushed to 104/3 and that is when all hell broke loose. 90 was needed off 7 overs and it is very possible with 7 wickets in hand.
However, things went absolutely against the plan. The Volts captain stepped up and triggered a collapse. From 104/3 they slipped to 124/7 in matter of 18 balls. Captain Georgeson took 3 off those 4 wickets to fall. The required rate shot up to more than 15 an over. The pair of Jayden Lennox and Brett Randell added a few runs post that, but the runs required were far off their batting capability. Eventually the Stags folded for 152/8.
The pick of the bowlers for the Volts were Captain Luke Georgeson (4-23) and Danru Ferns (2-24). The Volts have been superb today on the back of Glenn Phillips and their bowlers. However, that is the last game Phillips and their other pro Max Chu are going to play for them this season. Both players will now be heading to India for the white ball series. The Volts management will have some thinking to do regarding selection. For the Stags, they were just off their game and have a lot of thinking to do going into 2026.
W GONE! Bacon gets a wicket to his name on the final ball of the match! Fuller and angled into the batter. Randell looks to flick at it, but gets the leading edge that balloons up towards the third man region. The fielder inside the ring backpedals and takes it safely. Otago Volts win by 41 runs and register their first win of the season.
