Johan van der Wath was a seam-bowling all-rounder who used cutters and power-hitting to earn the reputation of a T20 specialist. He is a former cricketer who represented South Africa in 10 ODIs and eight T20Is. However, van der Wath was a domestic legend and played the sport for close to two decades.
The Natal-born started his journey for Easterns in 1994 to represented them for seven seasons, before he migrated to Eagles to get the recognition of the national selectors in the 2006-07 season. van der Wath made his ODI debut against Australia at the MCG and the next month found his way in the T20I team as well.
The all-rounder was a regular in the Proteas during the 2006-07 season. He was part of the historic Johannesburg ODI between Australia and South Africa and scored a quick 18-ball 35. He also played five games during the inaugural World T20. However, due to Jacques Kallis already in the ranks, van der Wath could never make his mark and played his last international game during the 20-over global event in 2007.
Though, van der Wath was a domestic legend of all sorts. Apart from playing in South Africa, the all-rounder represented Northamptonshire, Sussex, and Canterbury. He also featured in the IPL 2011 where he played three games for Royal Challengers Bangalore. In 2014, the South African finally hung his boots up after taking 743 domestic wickets and scoring 7070 runs.
In 2021, the allrounder again donned a jersey after seven years when he represented the South African Legends during the Road Safety World Series in India.
