Player Bio
The South African is a product of the age-group system and represented Kwa-Zulu Natal, before playing for his country’s U19 team in 2014. As the teenager graduated towards serious domestic cricket, he earned the tag of a T20 prospect early, as the joint second-highest wicket-taker in the Africa Cup, in the following season.
In 2015-16, the pacer played for Titans, when his lethal and wicket-taking bowling took them to the final of the Africa T20 Cup and later home. As his domestic career took off, Ngidi started taking giant leaps. As his domestic career took off, Ngidi started taking giant leaps. Hence, the national selectors identified the budding talent and awarded Ngidi his international cap in 2017.
Having made his T20I debut in 2017, Ngidi made his Test debut when India visited in early 2018.
The pacer was included in the playing XI for the Centurion Test when his statemate, Dale Steyn, got injured. Ngidi started with seven wickets in the match, including a six-for in the second innings, where he scalped the then World No. 1, Virat Kohli. Later in the series, he was awarded his ODI debut.
In the 2018 South African Cricket Annual Awards, he was named as one of the five 'Cricketers of the Year'. The tall pacer also won the ODI and T20I cricketer of the year at Cricket South Africa’s annual awards ceremony.
Ahead of the Indian Premier League 2018, Ngidi came into the limelight, which resulted in him getting a contract with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL. He went on to play seven games in his maiden season and was part of the title-winning CSK team.
Ngidi was also part of the South African team that toured England for the 2019 World Cup, but much like his team, the pacer too had an under-par tournament. The South African now has quality international as well as IPL experience under his belt. The Proteas team management would hope Ngidi to convert his potential into performances and help South Africa in future tournaments.
In February 2022, Lungi Ngidi was secured by the Delhi Capitals during the IPL auction for the 2022 season.
In May 2023, he joined the San Francisco Unicorns for the inaugural season of Major League Cricket (MLC).
Ngidi was named in South Africa’s squad for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, announced in September 2021. In July 2022, during the opening match of the series against England, he achieved his maiden five-wicket haul in T20I cricket.
Lungi played a critical role during the Proteas' campaign in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, where they lost to Australia in the semifinal. The paceman was able to scalp 10 wickets in eight matches.
In May 2024, he was selected as a reserve player in South Africa’s squad for the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Ngidi was also part of South Africa’s squad for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, where the team reached the semi-finals but fell short of making it to the final.
For the IPL 2025 season, he was acquired by the Royal Challengers Bangalore at his base price of INR 1 crore.
Ngidi's journey in international and franchise cricket highlights his ability to deliver impactful performances across formats. His pace, accuracy, and wicket-taking ability make him a valuable asset for any team. As he continues to evolve, Ngidi remains a key figure in South African cricket and a promising force in the T20 circuit.
