Mehidy Hasan Miraz is a spinning all-rounder who has emerged from a country that has a rich history of producing quality finger spinners. He made his international debut as an 18-year-old, and since then has solved Bangladesh’s problem by playing as a skilled off-spin bowler who is more than capable of whacking his long handle down the order. 

Miraz started playing at the tender age of eight years, when he was selected to play in the U-14 National Cricket Tournament. He then got opportunities to play in the U-17 and U-19 competitions. In 2016, he captained Bangladesh in the U-19 World Cup, playing the role of an all-rounder. His team finished in third place, and he was adjudged Player of the Tournament.

After the U-19 World Cup, the all-rounder had an astonishing first-class debut for the Khulna Division. He ended the season with 30 wickets at a staggering average, which followed up with his maiden international call-up.

Mehidy made his Test debut against touring England in October 2016. The off-spinner played a mammoth role in the two-match series, where he took 19 wickets, including two six-wicket hauls, and finished the series with the Player of the Series award. In early 2017, he got his ODI and T20I caps against Sri Lanka, and since then, he hasn’t looked back. 

In a short career span, Mehidy was part of Bangladesh’s squad for the 2019 World Cup. The offie was Bangladesh’s most economical bowler in the mega-event. 

Miraz embarked on a thrilling T20 World Cup journey, weaving his magic across Muscat, Sharjah, and Abu Dhabi. The off-spinner had great outings against Scotland, Oman and Papua New Guinea, but he was dreadful versus Sri Lanka, England and the West Indies.

In 2022, Miraz delivered a series of impactful performances across formats, showcasing his development as a key all-rounder for Bangladesh. The year kicked off with the away Test series against New Zealand in January, where he played both Tests, scoring 54 runs and taking 4 wickets at an average of 58.50, with his best figures of 2/36 reflecting a tough outing on pace-friendly pitches.

During the ACC Asia Cup in August 2022, held in the UAE in T20 format, Mehidy played all five matches for Bangladesh. While his batting opportunities were limited due to a lower-order role, his bowling provided control in the middle overs, notably in the opener against Afghanistan on August 30, where he bowled tightly despite the team’s 7-wicket loss.

The ICC T20 World Cup in Australia provided Mehidy with a platform to play all seven matches, including the first round and Super 12 stages.

Miraz basked in the glow of recognition for his stellar 2022 exploits, with the Bangladesh Cricket Board honouring him with a coveted all-format central contract. This accolade celebrated his unwavering consistency across Test, ODI, and T20I cricket, where his dual mastery with bat and ball had solidified his status as a linchpin for Bangladesh.

In March 2023, he played a pivotal role in Bangladesh’s historic 3-0 T20I series whitewash against England at home. During the second T20I on March 12 in Mirpur, Mehidy produced a career-best bowling performance, taking 4 wickets for 12 runs in his 4 overs, which restricted England to 117 and earned him the Player of the Match award in a 4-wicket victory. His tight off-spin and ability to dismantle the English batting lineup, including key dismissals like Jos Buttler, were instrumental in Bangladesh securing their first-ever T20I series win against the reigning world champions.

In 2024, Miraz continued to cement his status as one of Bangladesh’s premier all-rounders, delivering standout performances across formats. In August, during the second Test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi, he achieved a crucial five-wicket haul, finishing with figures of 5/61 in the first innings to dismiss Pakistan for 274 runs. This effort, complemented by 78 runs in Bangladesh’s first innings, earned him the Player of the Match award and contributed significantly to Bangladesh’s historic 2-0 series win, their first Test series victory against Pakistan. 

In September, after a 14-month absence from T20Is, Mehidy was recalled to Bangladesh’s squad for the series against India, reflecting his growing importance across formats. On September 30, during the second Test against India in Kanpur, he became the fourth Bangladeshi bowler to reach 300 international wickets.
