Former England off-spinner Gareth Batty is set to begin a new chapter in his coaching career after leaving Surrey to join Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as the batting coach ahead of IPL 2027.
The appointment comes as CSK revamp their coaching setup following the departure of batting coach Michael Hussey and head coach Stephen Fleming. Batty will work under newly appointed head coach Zaheer Khan, bringing extensive experience from English domestic cricket.
The 49-year-old leaves Surrey after a five-year stint as head coach, during which he guided the county to three consecutive County Championship titles. However, his final season with the team proved challenging, with Surrey finishing seventh in the 2026 Championship.
In this article, let’s take a look at Gareth Batty’s record as a coach before his CSK appointment.
Gareth Batty’s Record As Coach In County Championship
Before moving into coaching, Batty enjoyed a long playing career, representing England in all three international formats. He played nine Tests, 10 ODIs and one T20I, and represented Surrey and Worcestershire in county cricket.
Batty retired from professional cricket at the end of the 2021 season and immediately joined Surrey’s coaching staff.
Gareth Batty took charge of Surrey as interim head coach in 2022 following Vikram Solanki’s departure. After guiding the team to the County Championship title in his first season, Batty was appointed permanent head coach in November 2022.
Surrey continued their dominance under his leadership, successfully defending the title in 2023 and 2024. The three consecutive championships made Surrey the first team in nearly 60 years to achieve the feat.
However, the team could not maintain the same consistency in the following seasons. Surrey finished runners-up in 2025 before enduring a difficult 2026 campaign, ending seventh in Division One with two wins, four defeats and eight draws from 14 matches.
Despite the disappointing final season, Batty’s tenure included one of the most successful runs in Surrey’s recent history, with the team winning three consecutive titles.
| Season | Surrey’s Result |
| 2022 | Champions |
| 2023 | Champions |
| 2024 | Champions |
| 2025 | Runners-up |
| 2026 | Seventh place |

Gareth Batty’s Record As Coach In T20 Blast
Batty also enjoyed consistent results in England’s domestic T20 competition, the Vitality Blast. Surrey reached the knockout stages in each of his five seasons as head coach, highlighting the team’s competitiveness in the shortest format.
The county reached the finals twice during his tenure, although they could not add a T20 Blast title to their trophy cabinet.
His coaching work also contributed to the development of several Surrey players who progressed into the England setup. Batty additionally gained experience in franchise cricket, including work with MI London in The Hundred.
Safe to say, his experience in T20 cricket could prove valuable at Chennai Super Kings, who have faced a historic slump, missing the IPL playoffs for three consecutive seasons (2024, 2025, and 2026), marking the first time in the franchise's history.
Gareth Batty’s Record As Coach In One-Day Cup
Surrey’s performances in the One-Day Cup were less successful than their results in red-ball and T20 cricket. While the team showed promise in the competition during Batty’s tenure, they failed to establish the same consistency they achieved in the County Championship.
The 2026 season was particularly disappointing, as Surrey failed to qualify for the knockout stages of the 50-over tournament. Their struggles across white-ball competitions came alongside a seventh-place finish in the County Championship, marking a difficult end to Batty’s time in charge.
