In a significant development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Japan Cricket Association (JCA) have announced a historic T20I match between India and Japan. The match will be played on September 22 at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan.
The match will be played for 'The Suzuki Cup 2026' and will mark an important moment in cricket and India-Japan relations. It will launch celebrations for the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
However, this is not the first time that such a historic match has been announced or played. In this article, let’s take a look at some of the historic matches played by the Indian team over the years.

The 1971 Oval Triumph- When an elephant was brought as part of Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations
One of India's memorable moments came on August 24, 1971, when India faced England in the third Test at The Oval in London. The match was historic because India secured its first-ever Test and series victory in England.
The final day also coincided with Ganesh Chaturthi, adding a special cultural connection. During the lunch break, Indian supporters brought a three-year-old elephant named 'Bella' to the ground after borrowing her from nearby Chessington Zoo.
The fans believed the elephant would bring good luck to the Indian team, making the match special.

'Friendship Tour' - India tour of South Africa in 1992-93
It is important to note that India's 1992/93 tour of South Africa marked the Proteas' return to international Test cricket following more than two decades of isolation due to apartheid.
India became the first official team to tour South Africa after its return to the international game. The series was widely described as a 'Friendship Tour' and carried immense significance.
The India tour of South Africa in 1992/93 also introduced a major technological change in the game. Television replays were used to help umpires make difficult run-out decisions, and Sachin Tendulkar became the first batter to be given out by a third umpire.
BCCI Platinum Jubilee 2004/05 Match between India and Pakistan
On November 13, 2004, India and Pakistan faced each other at the prestigious Eden Gardens, Kolkata, in a special ODI organised as part of the BCCI's Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
Talking about the match, India batted first after winning the toss and scored 292/6 in 50 overs. The star of the match was Yuvraj Singh, who scored 78 runs in 62 balls at a strike rate of 125.80.
Pakistan produced a strong chase and reached 293/4 in 49 overs, winning the match by six wickets. Salman Butt scored an unbeaten 108 runs off 130 balls.

75 Years of Friendship - India vs Australia Test at Narendra Modi Stadium
Another historic match took place on March 9, 2023, when India hosted Australia in the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The match celebrated 75 years of friendship between India and Australia. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese took a lap of honour before the game, while both captains received special Test caps.
In the match, Australia scored a massive 480 runs in the first innings. Usman Khawaja led the innings and made 180 runs off 422 balls; along with him, Cameron Green made 114 runs off 170 balls.
India responded well and made 571 runs in the first innings, with Virat Kohli's century. The star player made 186 runs off 364 balls, with Shubman Gill also scoring 128 runs off 235 balls.
Australia finished on 175/2 in the second innings as the match ended in a draw.
