India's opening pair of Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma created history during the Women's T20 World Cup 2026 match against Australia at Lord's on Sunday, June 28. The duo became the highest-scoring partnership pair against a single opponent in Women's T20I cricket.

The record came during one of India's biggest matches of the tournament. After South Africa defeated Bangladesh earlier in the day, India entered the Australia clash knowing that only a victory would keep their hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive. Australia had already qualified for the knockout stage with eight points, while India needed a win to join them.

Batting first after winning the toss, India got another positive start from Mandhana and Shafali. Their partnership not only gave India a strong platform but also helped them enter the record books.

Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma now hold the record for the most partnership runs against a single opponent in Women's T20I cricket.

Their partnership runs against Australia reached 742, moving them to the top of the all-time list. They went past several other successful opening pairs in women's cricket.

Smriti And Shafali Rock Australia With Solid Batting Prowess

The Indian openers looked comfortable right from the start against the Australian bowling attack.

Shafali Verma played her natural attacking game before falling to Sophie Molineux for 34 runs off 26 balls. Her innings included three fours and two sixes.

At the other end, Smriti Mandhana continued to anchor the innings. She remained unbeaten on 30 off 29 deliveries at the time of the record, hitting five boundaries while rotating the strike well.

The pair added 66 runs for the opening wicket in just 9.1 overs before Australia finally got the breakthrough. Jemimah Rodrigues then joined Mandhana at the crease as India looked to build towards a competitive total.

India Have Everything At Stake Against Australia In T20 World Cup 2026

The match against Australia is India's biggest game of the tournament so far. Earlier in the day, South Africa defeated Bangladesh to finish the group stage with eight points. That result left India on six points before the Australia match.

The qualification equation became simple. India now have to beat Australia Women to qualify for the semi-finals. Any defeat or a washout would send India out of the tournament, while South Africa would go through alongside Australia.

That made the opening partnership between Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma even more valuable. Their 66-run stand provided India with the perfect start in a match where every run could prove crucial.

With a semi-final place on the line, India will hope the record-breaking effort from their openers lays the foundation for a memorable victory over a formidable side that are eyeing the Women's T20 World Cup 2026 title.
