On Sunday, February 15, India’s young opener Ishan Kishan created history in the T20 World Cup 2026. Notably, Kishan became the first Indian wicketkeeper ever to win the Player of the Match award in a T20 World Cup match. This milestone came after his outstanding batting display against Pakistan.

In an important game held at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, India defeated Pakistan by 61 runs. As a result, India secured a place in the Super 8 stage of the tournament.

A dominant win for India against Pakistan

To begin with, Pakistan won the toss and chose to bowl first. India started their innings on a difficult note. Abhishek Sharma was dismissed for zero in the very first over. Therefore, pressure quickly built on the Indian side.

At that moment, Ishan Kishan stepped in and changed the direction of the match. He played a confident and attacking innings, scoring 77 runs off just 40 balls. Consequently, India posted a strong total of 175/7 in their 20 overs.

His batting showed a mix of aggression and control. He attacked loose deliveries, and at the same time he remained calm under pressure. As a result, the momentum shifted fully toward India.

Ishan Kishan’s knock that changed the game

Although the pitch was not easy for batting early on, Ishan Kishan trusted his strengths. He later explained in the post-match press conference that he focused on watching the ball carefully and playing shots that suited his style.

“I think the wicket was not that easy in the beginning, but sometimes you just have to believe what you want to play, what shots are on, and you have to just focus on your strength.

So I was just keeping it simple and watching the ball and playing with the field, maybe trying to make them run as much as they can, but yeah, I think it worked pretty well in my side," Kishan said in the post-match press conference.

Moreover, he rotated the strike and made the Pakistani fielders work harder in the field. This smart method increased pressure on the opposition. Eventually, his 77-run innings became the highest individual score in the match.

His performance helped India register their highest-ever T20 World Cup total against Pakistan across nine meetings.

Pakistan’s struggle in the chase

In reply, Pakistan never looked settled during the chase. The Indian bowlers delivered tight and disciplined spells, and they continued to build pressure. As a result, Pakistan were bowled out for 114 runs in 18 overs. This total matched their joint-lowest score against India in T20 World Cups.

Since the target remained challenging and India’s bowling stayed sharp, the match ended in a comfortable 61-run victory for Indi

For his match-winning innings, Ishan Kishan received the Player of the Match award. Furthermore, he has shown excellent form throughout the tournament. In three innings so far, he has scored 158 runs at a remarkable strike rate of 197.50 and an average of 52.67.
