Netizens react on Scotland field [Source: X]
The West Indies vs Scotland clash on February 7 in the T20 World Cup 2026 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, saw some historic records made by Romario Shepherd. However, the highlight of the play was marked by the field setup Scotland stationed for Rovman Powell after West Indies lost two wickets quickly inside 10 overs.
As Rovman Powell came to the crease, Scotland fielded a super-aggressive setup with a silly point and a slip to mentally pressurise West Indies during their innings. West Indies scored a total of 182 runs to set a good target for Scotland and defended it successfully. However, things were not looking good at the beginning.
The iconic Gambhir vs MS Dhoni field setup
Shai Hope fell on the second ball of the ninth over, and Brandon King followed in the next over to leave West Indies reeling at 58 for 2 at the end of 10 overs, which dragged the run rate below six.
Hence, this put pressure on Rovman Powell, who came in to bat at number four. To add further pressure, Oliver Davidson and Richie Berrington devised a plan to squeeze the batter by placing an aggressive setup while Powell and West Indies needed to attack and hit outside the inner circle.
What is the iconic Gautam Gambhir field setup?
With Eden Gardens being the iconic venue it is, the setup coincidentally matched field placements tried in the past, including Gautam Gambhir’s four-fielder close-in setup for MS Dhoni during Rising Pune Supergiants’ matches against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2016.
Gambhir’s setup included a short leg, silly point, and two slips to force MS Dhoni into big shots under pressure. This eventually became a familiar strategy for many teams in the IPL and at the international level at Eden Gardens.
It wasn’t quite difficult to spot the similarity, as the internet was stormed with memes after screenshots of Scotland’s field setup went viral.
Let’s take a look at how fans reacted to the incident:
West Indies seal inaugural win in T20 World Cup 2026
Speaking of the match, after West Indies posted 182 on the back of a solid knock from Shimron Hetmyer, who scored 64 off 36 balls, Scotland began the chase but suffered early setbacks inside the first five overs.
Openers Michael Alexander Jones and Brandon McMullen were dismissed quickly, with George Munsey following in the sixth over to leave Scotland struggling at 37 for three.
However, the highlight was Romario Shepherd’s historic hat-trick at the venue, which sealed the game for West Indies. Shepherd took the wickets of Matthew Henry Cross, Michael Alexander Leask, and Oliver Davidson in the 17th over to end Scotland’s hopes at 133/8.
Scotland eventually managed only 147 as the West Indies registered a 35-run win in their opening match of the T20 World Cup. With this win, the West Indies will now look forward to conquering the rest of the group stage matches, where they will face England on February 11.
