It was yet another disappointing outing for Babar Azam in the Big Bash League 2025–26. In the ongoing clash between Brisbane Heat and Sydney Sixers, Babar Azam once again failed to make a notable contribution with the bat for Sydney Sixers.

The Pakistan star, Babar Azam, has been in the spotlight over the past few days following his visibly upset on-field reaction with Steve Smith after being denied a single during a crucial phase for the Sixers.

The Steve Smith and Babar Azam saga

Babar Azam was noticeably slow with the bat, and Steve Smith believed that keeping him off strike was the best option for Sydney Sixers to maximise their run flow. However, Babar did not take the decision lightly, and he was dismissed soon after, showing visible frustration while walking back to the pavilion.

Reports had also suggested that he created a ruckus in the dressing room with Steve Smith over being denied the single. However, putting that episode aside, Babar Azam’s stature was once again questioned as he failed to deliver in the very next game.

Babar Azam fails to deliver again during Heat chase

In the match against Brisbane Heat on January 18, Babar Azam failed to make his mark yet again. Chasing a target of 172, he managed to score just one run off seven deliveries. Opening the innings alongside Steve Smith, Babar was dismissed by Xavier Bartlett in the second over, leaving Sydney Sixers struggling at 21/1.

Babar Azam’s failure with the bat following the Steve Smith saga did not go down well with fans, who flooded social media with criticism and trolled the batter for his repeated failures in the BBL 2025–26.

Let us take a look at how netizens reacted to Babar Azam’s dismissal during the Brisbane Heat chase.

How Babar failed to live up to his name in BBL 2025-26?

In the match, Babar Azam spent his first six balls defending cautiously. When he attempted to flick Xavier Bartlett’s delivery on the seventh ball he faced, he could only manage a leading edge, which was safely caught by Max Bryant at mid-on.

Looking at the bigger picture, Babar Azam currently has a strike rate of just 104.12 in the BBL, with an average of 25.25. Although he has registered two half-centuries in his 10 innings, both knocks were on the slower side.

One came against Melbourne Renegades, where he scored 58 off 46 balls, and the other against Sydney Thunder, where he made 58 off 42 deliveries. These innings have not met the fast-paced standards expected in a T20 league like the BBL. Nevertheless, his tally of 202 runs from 10 matches remains a statistic he will find hard to ignore in the coming days.

All good between Smith and Babar?

Meanwhile, recent visuals suggested that Babar Azam attempted to shut down rumours of a rift with Steve Smith through a friendly gesture during the match against Brisbane Heat.

After Steve Smith attempted a reverse-cup catch that slipped out of his hands, Babar immediately ran towards him to appreciate the effort. The moment reflected mutual respect and indicated that any tension between Steve Smith and Babar Azam may have eased.
