Pakistan trounced Australia by 22 runs in the first T20I to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Even though senior pros like Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi failed to come up clutch in the match, Saim Ayub anchored Pakistan’s win with his all-round dynamisms.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif took note of the win and celebrated the occasion by sharing a congratulatory post on social media. Apart from congratulating the team, the Pakistani politician even praised controversial PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, calling the outcome a “proud moment” for the nation.
Fans troll Pakistan PM for celebrating “inconsequential win”
A day after Pakistan’s emphatic 22-run win over Australia, Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the PCB chairman and the ‘Men in Green’ for putting up a comprehensive performance in front of a strong home crowd.
As Pakistan took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, doing so against a depleted Australian team, the PM described the outcome as a “proud moment” for the entire nation.
Shehbaz Sharif wrote, “Well done Team Pakistan for an electrifying performance against Australia in the first T20I. I also appreciate Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi and his entire team for their tireless efforts in strengthening Pakistan cricket. Proud moment for the nation.”
As one can expect, several Indian fans were quick to respond to Sharif’s “celebratory” post over an “inconsequential win” in a bilateral T20I. While some fans trolled the Pakistan PM for taking pride over a random T20I result, others even took note of his Mohsin Naqvi praise by citing the latter’s Asia Cup 2025 trophy controversy last year.
Here is a look at some of the fans sharing hilarious memes at the expense of Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif:
Pakistan vs Australia 1st T20I: As it happened
Pakistan batted first and charted a competitive 168-8 in 20 overs. Senior pro Babar Azam was surprisingly demoted in the batting order by captain Agha Salman after the early loss of opener Sahibzada Farhan. Saim Ayub top-scored in the innings through his attacking 40 from 22 balls with three boundaries and two sixes.
For Australia, senior spinner Adam Zampa picked up four wickets at an expense of just 24, which included the prized scalps of Babar Azam and Saim Ayub.
In response, Shaheen Afridi failed to make any impact with the ball but two wickets apiece from Ayub (2-29) and Abrar Ahmed (2-10) helped Pakistan restrict Australia to just 146-8. With Pakistan securing a 22-run win, they took a 1-0 lead in the series.
It is worth noting that several key Australian players like regular captain Mitchell Marsh, Josh Inglis and Marcus Stoinis were rested from the playing XI. Moreover, legendary pacemen like Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins were excluded from the entire tour before the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Australia to face Pakistan in must-win second T20I
Trailing 0-1 in the series, the visiting Australia team will now face hosts Pakistan in a must-win second T20I on January 31. The match will also be hosted by the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore and the action will commence from 4:30 PM IST onwards.
The series serves as a final testing ground for both sides before the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka next month.
