Wicket-keeper batter Sanju Samson had a disappointing outing on his debut for CSK as his former team, RR, got him dismissed on just 6 off 7 runs in the third fixture of the IPL 2026 season. The cheap dismissal led to incessant trolling on social media.

CSK took on RR in the third match of IPL 2026, held at Guwahati. Rajasthan won the toss and opted to field first. The Super Kings, meanwhile, went with Samson as the first-choice wicket-keeper since MS Dhoni is unavailable due to a calf injury.

Sanju Samson disappoints big time on CSK debut

That being said, since his trade to CSK, fans were waiting to see Sanju Samson sparkle in yellow colours. The highly anticipated debut day arrived on March 30 with the Yellow Army hooked to their television screens.

However, in what turned out to be an anticlimactic scene, Samson was cleaned up by Nandre Burger on just 6 off 7 balls. On the final delivery of the second over, Burger bowled a 140 kph fuller ball, and Sanju tried to play it across the line.

But Sanju Samson missed the timing badly, and the ball crashed into his off-stump. That marked the end of Samson on the crease, and it triggered a wave of criticism on social media.

Fans called the wicket-keeper batter ‘overhyped’ and a ‘flat track bully.’ CSK fans were equally disappointed, as they had set high expectations for him coming into the tournament.

How did Sanju Samson land in CSK?

Just ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction, CSK acquired Sanju Samson from Rajasthan Royals in a trade, sending senior stars like Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran the other way.

Samson reportedly sought an exit from RR due to alleged differences with the management. Just prior to his trade, head coach Rahul Dravid also parted ways. This further escalated the matter.

Before CSK, RR reportedly approached KKR and DC with a potential trade offer, but things fell apart. 

For Chennai, the move made sense, as with MS Dhoni nearing the end of his playing career, the franchise wants to evaluate long-term wicketkeeper-batter options who could also lead. 

CSK is in deep trouble 

Meanwhile, CSK had the worst possible start to their IPL 2026 campaign as the batting order saw a mini-collapse while batting first against Rajasthan Royals at Guwahati. 

After losing Sanju Samson on just 6 runs, Chennai lost its captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, on 6 runs as Jofra Archer struck with a lethal delivery to send the stumps flying.

Ayush Mhatre couldn’t survive the storm either, as he was dismissed by Nandre Burger on a duck. As a desperate measure, CSK called in Sarfaraz Khan to bat as an impact player.

At the end of the first powerplay, the Super Kings had just 41 runs on the board at the loss of 4 wickets.
