The final and most anticipated New Zealand vs South Africa clash is set to take place at the Hagley Oval Stadium on March 25, and the stakes cannot be higher. Both teams have drawn the series so far with a 2-2 scoreline. Now, the winner will take it all.
Both the hosts and the visitors have been vigilant with their attacks and Playing XIs till now, but what matters the most is the final match now.
South Africa has tried several combinations and permutations throughout the series, and on a pace-friendly Christchurch, let’s take a look at the best option the Proteas will have ahead of the Kiwis.
South Africa predicted playing XI Vs New Zealand- 5th T20I
Openers and top order: Wiaan Mulder, Tony de Zorzi, Connor Esterhuizen (wk) and Rubin Hermann
The opening combination for South Africa will remain unchanged, as they seemed to have found a workable setup for most of the series. Wiaan Mulder is set to open with Tony de Zorzi.
Although Mulder’s form has not been the best, he has managed to score only 16 runs from the three matches he played as an opener in this series, including two ducks in the third and fourth T20Is. De Zorzi, on the other hand, has had a somewhat decent run, scoring 41 runs from four innings.
At No. 3, Connor Esterhuizen, the bright spot for the Proteas in this series, will come in to bat. The 24-year-old will be looking to add to his already impressive tally. With a strike rate of over 120, Connor will aim to provide momentum to South Africa in the final clash.
Following him, 29-year-old wicketkeeper-batter Rubin Hermann will bat at number four. He has not had a great series either, managing only 58 runs at an average of 19.33. With everything at stake, the top order, especially the opening pair, will need to fire if South Africa are to cross the finish line on a winning note.

Middle order and all-rounders: Jason Smith, Dian Forrester, George Linde and Gerald Coetzee
For the middle order, Jason Smith will begin the lineup. Smith has played all four matches in this T20I series and has scored a sub-par 51 runs, averaging 12.75. With limited options at their disposal, he is likely to continue despite his poor form with the bat.
Dian Forrester, another young prospect for the Proteas, will be next in line. He has a better average than Smith at 20.67. Though not highly impactful yet, his contribution with the bat in the first T20I helped South Africa put up some resistance against a low-spirited Kiwi side.
George Linde and Gerald Coetzee will form the core of the all-rounders for South Africa. Linde, who is highly flexible with any batting position he is assigned, has a solid average of 35 at an impressive strike rate of 179.49 from the three matches he has played. Hence, his spot is sealed, along with his handy spin option in Christchurch.
Gerald Coetzee, on the other hand, will bring his pace bowling into play, having picked up six wickets from four matches, although he has not been very productive with the bat.
Bowlers: Keshav Maharaj (c), Ottneil Baartman and Lutho Sipamla
The Proteas will head into the fifth T20I with a pace-heavy bowling lineup, featuring six bowling options at their disposal. South Africa will lead their attack with pace stars Ottniel Baartman and Lutho Sipamla, while Keshav Maharaj will spearhead the spin department.
At Christchurch, pacers and seamers tend to get the most assistance, with spinners often receiving minimal help and picking up fewer wickets.
Hence, a combination of two spin and four pace options, alongside George Linde, Gerald Coetzee, and Wiaan Mulder, should be sufficient to trouble New Zealand in the final T20I.
