Matheesha Pathirana for KKR in IPL 2026 (@akalugalage/X.com)
The winless Kolkata Knight Riders will take on Gujarat Titans in their upcoming fixture on Friday. The game scheduled at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will feature two teams with different momentum in IPL 2026 so far.
The Shubman Gill-led GT are on a two-match winning streak after losing their first two games. On the other hand, Ajinkya Rahane’s KKR are the only team without a win this season, with 4 defeats and 1 point, that too from a rain-curtailed match.
So far in the IPL 2026, neither KKR’s batting nor the bowling department has worked. On top of that, they have been marred by unfortunate injuries to several key players, like Harshit Rana, Akash Deep and the uncertainty looming around Matheesha Pathirana’s availability.
With the league moving at breakneck speed, the Kolkata-based franchise is in dire need of a win. The side needs an immediate turnaround for today's GT vs KKR clash. Thus, Pathirana’s return could be a beacon of hope amid a terrible season up until now.
What’s the latest update on Matheesha Pathirana in IPL 2026?
Acquired for a whopping Rs 18 crore in the IPL 2026 auction, Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana has been out since sustaining a calf strain during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026.

Recently, SLC mandated a separate fitness test for all its international stars before they are allowed to participate in a foreign league like the IPL. Pathirana cleared it on Sunday (April 12) and was granted the NOC soon after, but he missed the match against Chennai Super Kings.
The 23-year-old Pathirana is cleared to join the KKR squad for the remainder of the IPL 2026 season, providing a much-needed boost to a bowling attack currently hampered by injuries.
Will Matheesha Pathirana Play GT vs KKR IPL Match Today?
Despite being declared fit and granted the No-Objection Certificate from his national board, Sri Lanka, the former CSK pacer Matheesha Pathirana will most likely miss Kolkata Knight Riders’ match against the Gujarat Titans on Friday (April 17) in Ahmedabad.
According to the latest reports by The Hindu, a KKR spokesperson said the franchise was working out the ‘logistics’ of his joining the team’s IPL 2026 squad.
KKR, which is already reeling from the injuries to Harshit Rana and Akash Deep, have the likes of Vaibhav Arora, Cameron Green, Blessing Muzarabani and Kartik Tyagi carrying their bowling line-up. It is safe to say they have struggled to contain opposition batters as effectively as the management would have hoped.
Pathirana’s absence is particularly painful for KKR because of his ability to execute yorkers under pressure.
His "slingshot" action, much like Lasith Malinga's, makes the release point difficult for batters to pick up, especially in the final overs where KKR has conceded heavily this season.
Hence, Pathirana’s death-bowling skills will be hugely beneficial to the Kolkata-based franchise, whenever he joins the team.
