In the ongoing 2nd T20I between India and New Zealand, Shreyas Iyer has hogged the headlines for all the wrong reasons. The India skipper dropped an easy chance in the field, which quickly went viral on social media.
India had the chance to get Becon-John Jacobs early on in the innings, but Iyer dropped a sitter fielding at mid-off.
Shreyas Iyer Caught Sleeping At Mid-off
The incident occurred on the 3rd ball of the 11th over when Bevon-John Jacobs hit a shot that went straight to Iyer at mid-off. The ball travelled at an uncomfortable height around the chest area, where Shreyas Iyer couldn’t get hold of it.
The India skipper juggled the ball a couple of times before it went down, and the right-handed batter was disappointed with his effort. His position as a captain helped him bail out of the situation because no player, including the bowler expressed their disappointment.
India Ranks 2nd Last in Catch Efficiency Chart
India are playing their 300th T20I and if we compare every century milestone then the Men in Blue have performed their best from 200th T20I till 300th T20I. However, in this period, India's catching and fielding standards have dropped significantly.
Talking about catching, India are ranked 2nd worst in 2026 just above Pakistan. The Shreyas Iyer-led side have taken 168 catches and dropped 58 chances in 2026. Their overall effeciency is 74%.
Only Pakistan is below India with a catching effeciency of 73%. Afghanistan and England are the best two sides with a success rate of 84% and 83%.
India Energetic On Field In 2nd T20I vs New Zealand
Besides the dropped catch from Shreyas Iyer, India have been brilliant in the field. Tilak Varma took his 26th catch of the year and scripted a world record. Meanwhile, the fielders have been brilliant with throws particularly.
On several occassions, the bowlers, themselves, made throws at the stumps, which forced the New Zealand batters to put in a dive and save themselves from trouble.
