Indian domestic star Auqib Nabi made a successful debut in County Cricket. In the recent Surrey vs Yorkshire game, he bowled James Wharton with an unplayable delivery that left the fans in awe on social media.
To help Nabi get some experience in overseas conditions, the BCCI negotiated a County deal for him with Surrey last month. Subsequently, the Jammu and Kashmir pacer made his debut against Yorkshire at The Oval and immediately left an impact.

Interestingly, Auqib Nabi bagged his maiden County wicket in the first innings when he dismissed Indian spinner and tailender, Kuldeep Yadav. But in the second innings, he proved lethal to James Wharton, an experienced batter.
On Day 2, Nabi bowled a length ball just outside the off stump to Wharton which nipped back into the right-hander. Wharton was caught between playing with his bat and defending with his pad.
The ball squeezed through the gap between bat and pad and smashed into the stumps. James was puzzled by that peach delivery and had no answer to Nabi’s lethal blow.

James Wharton walked back after scoring just 4 runs, and Nabi successfully bagged his second wicket of the game. Eventually, Yorkshire got bowled out on just 82 runs, giving Surrey a target of 185.

Why was Nabi chosen for the County opportunity?
Having said that, the BCCI got personally involved in discussions with Surrey Cricket to finalise a County deal for Auqib to test the fast bowler ahead of the upcoming and crucial Test series against New Zealand.
According to reports, Nabi is being viewed as a promising future prospect for India in red-ball cricket, especially after a sensational Ranji Trophy season where he bagged 60 wickets and guided Jammu and Kashmir to a maiden title victory.
Not only that, but Nabi did receive his maiden Test call-up for the Sri Lanka series after Jasprit Bumrah’s injury, but failed to make a debut. Still, Auqib Nabi has a bright chance to become India’s leading pace bowler if he continues to perform consistently.
Nabi’s experience makes him a special prospect
It’s no secret that India’s pace attack is struggling in Test cricket, with fast bowlers getting injured on a regular basis. Jasprit Bumrah is on a workload management program while Mohammed Siraj is the only senior frontline seamer available.
Players like Gurnoor Brar and Prasidh Krishna are inconsistent, while Harshit Rana and Nitish Reddy are barely fit. This is where Auqib fills the gap. He has a solid first-class red-ball record behind him.
Nabi is not just a raw talent but an experienced pacer who can take wickets consistently and also absorb pressure in dire situations. Hence, to save the WTC 2027 final dream and build a stable pace attack in Test format, India must look forward to giving Auqib Nabi a debut.
