The 39-year-old cricketer, who has previously played international matches for Team India along with the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, is intending to give something back to the game.Kumar announced his retirement from all forms of cricket back in October 2018. I have done coaching before and I was a selector in UPCA earlier, so I thought of applying.”With Kumar’s prior coaching experience as well as his stint as selector for the UPCA, the former cricketer will certainly fancy himself to find a place in BCCI’s new junior selection committee.Praveen Kumar to face stiff competition from fellow applicantsJust a couple of weeks ago, fellow former India cricketer Ramesh Powar also applied for a place in the BCCI junior selection committee. It is worth noting that Powar has also previously served as the head coach of the India Women’s national cricket team.In addition, former India cricketer and ex-Hyderabad selector Sudeep Tyagi applied for a post, along with Uttar Pradesh fast bowler Ashish Winston Zaidi. Ex-Mumbai batter Manoj Joglekar is also one of the candidates in race to find a place in the committee. All in all, Praveen Kumar will face some stiff competition from a number of experienced candidates.What is the responsibility of junior selection committeeThe BCCI junior selection committee will be responsible for selecting all age-group Indian cricket teams, including U19 groups for away tours or training camps. The committee will also schedule and organize several BCCI junior tournaments and overseas junior tours.Moreover, the committee will be required to handle all matters related to the conduct and administration of those competitions, as well as to promote strong ethical values and awareness about drugs and match-fixing to the junior players. A look at Praveen Kumar careerAs a player, Praveen Kumar played six Tests, 68 ODIs and 10 T20I matches for Team India between the years 2007 and 2012. He made his international debut in November 2007 under the leadership of MS Dhoni, and was one of the heroes of India’s historic 2008 ODI tri-series win on Australian soil a couple of months later. Praveen Kumar was also a part of the Indian squad that lifted the 2010 Asia Cup in Sri Lanka, where he was teammates with future legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
