At just 14 years of age, Vaibhav Suryavanshi is already a force to reckon with. In 2024, the rising star from Bihar made history by debuting in the Ranji Trophy at just 12, becoming the second youngest to do so for his state. His elegant strokeplay and fearless batting fast-tracked his rise as he bagged his maiden IPL contract in 2025.

With only a month left for the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026) to begin, in this article, we take a look at Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s steep ascent from a teenage player from Bihar to the Rajasthan Royals’ best bargain of the IPL 2025 auction.

In the IPL auction 2025, held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Suryavanshi, who entered the auction with a base price of INR 30 lakh, was sold to Rajasthan Royals for a whopping INR 1.10 crore after an intense bidding war with the Delhi Capitals (DC). His selection made him the first player younger than the IPL itself to be purchased in an auction.

Ahead of the IPL 2026 auction, the young prodigy was among the 13 players retained by the Rajasthan franchise.

On April 28, 2025, the 14-year-old etched his name in the record books with a blistering 38-ball 101 in the 47th game of the IPL 2025. The 35-ball century by the Rajasthan Royals opener became the second-fastest in the tournament's history after Chris Gayle's 30-ball blitz for RCB against Pune Warriors India in 2013.

On top of that, at 14 years & 32 days, Suryavanshi is the youngest ever recorded T20 centurion, breaking Vijay Zol's mark (18y 118d) in 2018. It also happens to be the youngest recorded century in all limited-overs matches in professional cricket. Zahoor Elahi was 15 years & 209 days when he hit a List A ton in the Pakistan domestic List A tournament in 1986.

Lastly, Suryavanshi ended the tournament with highly impressive numbers. Playing seven games in his maiden IPL season, the teenager piled up 252 runs at a strike rate of 206.55.

In the 18th season, the young batter had the perfect platform to refine his game and shape a bright future, training under the batting great, Rahul Dravid, alongside stars like Sanju Samson and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
