In a significant development, Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene issued the Suryakumar Yadav injury update after the five-time champions defeated KKR in their IPL 2026 opener. Led by Hardik Pandya, MI had a winning start to the season, as they accomplished a historic run-chase, powered by flamboyant knocks from Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton.

Batting first, the Knight Riders broke multiple records and posted a massive total of 220 runs on the board. However, the MI opening duo of Rohit and Rickelton made a mockery of the run chase, helping their team cruise past the total with scintillating half-centuries.

After the game concluded, the Mumbai Indians head coach, Mahela Jayawardene, released the Suryakumar Yadav injury update.

Suryakumar Yadav plays as impact substitute in MI Vs KKR

Five-time champions Mumbai Indians used to keep Rohit Sharma as their impact player in the earlier IPL seasons. However, their inaugural IPL 2026 face-off unveiled a massive twist, as Rohit came out to field, with Suryakumar warming the bench.

Although the Indian T20I captain came out to bat and scored 16 runs off just 8 balls, his absence during the first half sparked injury rumours.

With several reports questioning the Indian T20I captain's fitness, Jayawardene revealed that Suryakumar had slight discomfort in his groin and didn't field in the first half of the MI Vs KKR match.

The Mumbai Indians coach clarified that although Suryakumar was comfortably fielding in the training session, the management adopted a cautious approach and used him as an impact player to avoid a serious injury setback.

“I hope you don't create unwanted stories. The camp is very happy. Everyone's happy. Sky came, joined us. He had an extra couple of days he wanted as well. He joined. He had a little tight groin. He was doing fielding and all that," Jayawardene said in the post-match press conference.

After issuing the Suryakumar Yadav injury update, the former Sri Lankan captain expected the MI legend to fully recover from the setback before the next IPL match against Delhi Capitals on April 4.

"I knew I had another 5 days from this game to the other game. I just wanted to give him that extra bit of time. He was even keen at the end to go for 3-4 overs,” he added.

Their encounter against KKR at the Wankhede Stadium witnessed the Mumbai Indians' first-ever victory in their IPL opener in 14 years.

Although they had a torrid time with the ball, the five-time champions bounced back remarkably during the run chase, making the most of the batting-friendly conditions in Mumbai.

Rohit Sharma starred with the bat, smashing 78 runs off just 38 deliveries with the help of six boundaries and as many sixes. Ryan Rickelton scored 81 runs, while Hardik Pandya and Naman Dhir remained unbeaten to ensure a smooth win for their team.
