Shamar Springer, the right-arm fast bowler, has replaced Keemo Paul in the West Indies Test squad for their upcoming tour of Bangladesh. Paul was selected for the Test squad, but according to Cricket West Indies, he will return home for personal and family reasons.
The 28-year-old pacer has played 3 ODIs and 12 T20Is but has yet to make his Test debut; he could get his chance in the upcoming matches against Bangladesh.
Keemo Paul out as Springer gets a huge opportunity to shine
Both Springer and Paul were part of the West Indies team for the T20I series against India, but the 28-year-old Springer was not picked for the Test tour of Bangladesh. However, at the last moment, Paul withdrew, and it gave an opportunity for the right-arm pacer, Springer, to shine.
Springer has played 23 first-class matches in the West Indies’ domestic circuit, and he has racked up 1043 runs, with an average of 32.59. Moreover, he has taken 58 wickets in the same period, and this all-round ability could come in handy against Bangladesh.
Moreover, the pacer will be oozing with confidence after delivering the goods against India. In the recently concluded T20I series, he scalped 7 wickets to help the West Indies draw 2-2.
West Indies' updated Test squad for Bangladesh series
Roston Chase (capt), Jomel Warrican (vice-capt), Joshua Bishop, John Campbell, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Joshua Da Silva (wk), Justin Greaves, Kavem Hodge, Amir Jangoo (wk), Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Kemar Roach, Jayden Seales, Shamar Springer, Kevin Wickham.
Other notable omissions from West Indies Test squad
Interestingly, the Windies will miss their best batter on the away tour of Bangladesh. Shai Hope, who wreaked havoc against India by scoring two centuries, has been rested from the tour.
The Windies Cricket Board wanted to give rest to Hope after a gruelling India tour, but it came as a huge blow since the player was in the form of his life.
Apart from Hope, Alzarri Joseph, the fast bowler, will also miss the Bangladesh tour due to workload management reasons. Paul had initially replaced Joseph in the Test squad.
