Rohit Sharma has suffered yet another injury scare, this time prior to India’s series-opening first ODI match against Afghanistan in Dharamshala. The legendary Indian opener was hit on his right thumb during a nets training session by fast bowler Prasidh Krishna.

While Sharma seemingly recovered from his injury, the cricketer looked quite rusty during the remainder of the training session.

It is worth noting that the 39-year-old also suffered from a hamstring injury concern for a major part of the recently-concluded IPL 2026 season

Rohit Sharma nearly suffered a finger injury when he was hit on his right thumb by Prasidh Krishna during Team India training session in Dharamshala on Friday, June 12.

According to Sahil Malhotra from TOI, the cricketer also looked quite rusty with the bat overall for a major part of the nets session as India prepares for the first home ODI of the series against Afghanistan.

Rohit’s repeated brush with injuries puts World Cup spot at stake

The series against Afghanistan forms a part of Team India’s roadmap for next year’s 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. Sharma, who currently features only in the ODI format for India, will be keen to make the most of the opportunities available and cement his place in the side amid growing competition.

However, the former Indian captain seems to be suffering from recurring fitness concerns. During the IPL 2026 season, the cricketer suffered a hamstring injury while playing for the Mumbai Indians franchise against the RCB in Mumbai a couple of months ago.

The injury prompted him to miss five Mumbai Indians matches of the season, as he barely attained full recovery to get selected in India squad for the series against Afghanistan. However, his latest injury scare during the training session in Dharamshala before the series now puts further focus on his fitness, with India set to begin preparations for the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in earnest.

Another injury going forward might even jeopardize Rohit Sharma's place in India's squad for the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup.

Shubman Gill, Jaiswal likely to open in case of Rohit injury

In case Rohit Sharma gets excluded from the Indian playing XI against Afghanistan owing to either injury or any other concern, captain Shubman Gill might open the innings with young Yashasvi Jaiswal instead. In such a scenario, explosive left-hander Ishan Kishan might take the number three position.

Jaiswal himself was included in Team India squad for the series against Afghanistan as an injury replacement of modern-day batting behemoth Virat Kohli.

As of now, Rohit looks all set to take field for the Indian team in the upcoming home series, and the senior pro has a point to prove to the selectors ahead of the 2027 World Cup in South Africa next year.

A strong showing against Afghanistan could go a long way in easing concerns over both his form and fitness as India begins its journey towards the ODI spectacle.
