Rohit Sharma issues apology [Source: AFP]
In a video going viral on social media, former Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma is seen making a heartfelt apology over an incident that happened in the city of Kolkata, where MI played their last IPL game against KKR.
MI faced KKR on May 20 at the Eden Gardens, where the visitors lost by 4 wickets in a one-sided contest. However, Mumbai also had a few supporters in the crowd, out of whom a young girl went home crying.
Rohit Sharma apologises to fan girl
For context, after the MI vs KKR IPL 2026 match, many fans gathered outside the hotel where the Mumbai Indians were staying, hoping to see superstar Rohit Sharma.
One young female fan had been waiting specifically to meet Rohit. When he came out and left without noticing her, she became emotional and started crying. A video of her crying spread widely on social media.
After the clip went viral, Rohit Sharma personally responded with an apology video message. He explained that sometimes, in chaos and noise, it’s difficult to notice things.

However, Rohit made a big promise to the fan, saying he will meet her personally the next time he visits Kolkata.
Naturally, fans were impressed with the gesture and praised Rohit Sharma for acknowledging an ordinary supporter instead of ignoring the situation.
How did Rohit perform vs KKR?
Meanwhile, on the field, Rohit Sharma had an awful day as he was dismissed on 15 off 13 balls by Saurabh Dubey. The Mumbai Indians opener went for a big shot but holed out to Cameron Green to put his team in trouble.
MI couldn’t recover after early wickets and finished with 147. On the other hand, KKR approached the chase comfortably.
Manish Pandey and Rovman Powell stitched a 64-run partnership to guide KKR to an easy victory in 18.5 overs.
As for Rohit Sharma, he has had a mixed season with the bat, scoring 283 runs in 8 innings at a 160 strike rate, including two half-centuries. However, the veteran missed a few games in between due to a hamstring injury.
Not only that, the Mumbai Indians have used him as an impact player, which further reduces his contribution on the field. As a result, MI couldn’t do well in the season either, getting eliminated in 9th position.
Mumbai Indians encounter another failed season
That being said, the Mumbai Indians failed to turn up as a collective unit in the IPL 2026 season. They sit in the ninth position on the points table with 8 points in 13 games.
A big factor behind this fallout was the lacklustre effort from the batting unit, especially Suryakumar Yadav, who managed to accumulate just 210 runs in 12 games.
Also, injuries to Mitchell Santner and Quinton de Kock didn’t help MI either. However, their squad was still good enough if every player performed at their absolute best.
Regardless, questions are now raised on Hardik Pandya’s captaincy as well since the Mumbai Indians appear to have disintegrated under his leadership.
