CSK face big trouble due to MS Dhoni [Source: AFP]
CSK ended their IPL 2026 campaign on a bitter note as they bowed out of the playoff race with just 12 points gathered in 14 games. Moreover, talks around a potential overhaul in the coaching staff have already begun, but MS Dhoni has been surprisingly dragged into the conversation.
After a disastrous IPL 2025 season where they finished at the bottom of the table for the first time in the tournament’s history, Chennai again failed to qualify for the playoffs in 2026.
This has led to frustration among fans as they are not happy with the strategy and mindset of the current coaching staff, led by Stephen Fleming.
MS Dhoni is becoming a roadblock in CSK’s transition
Stephen Fleming joined CSK as head coach in 2009 and has held the post for the last 17 years. His partnership with former captain MS Dhoni led Chennai to five IPL titles.
However, the synergy has fallen apart since Dhoni stepped down as captain. With CSK struggling to form a balanced unit consistently, the franchise has reportedly begun looking for Felming’s alternatives.
According to the Indian Express, CSK had internally explored possible long-term replacements for Fleming.
However, at least one prominent Indian coaching candidate reportedly chose not to pursue the role due to uncertainty over how much operational control would truly be available with MS Dhoni still looming large over the franchise environment.

The report further claims that another potential coaching option was even advised to wait before considering the job seriously, with the understanding that any major restructuring inside CSK may only happen after Dhoni fully steps away from the setup.
While MS Dhoni may no longer be actively involved in every tactical discussion, his presence, influence, and stature reportedly continue to dominate the franchise culture.
Dhoni may decide Fleming’s future
That being said, MS Dhoni’s influence in CSK’s internal decision-making has always been paramount. The former legend has earned his place on the table by winning five IPL titles for the franchise.
Hence, if a decision were to be made on Stephen Fleming’s future, it would surely have to be passed by MS Dhoni. Now, Fleming and Dhoni have had a great relationship.
As a result, it would be tough for CSK to convince Dhoni to approve the transition. But for now, CSK must take a step back and figure out things that are holding them back and be ready to make tough calls before the next IPL season.
What about Dhoni’s future in the IPL?
That being said, CSK’s problem would be resolved if MS Dhoni retired from the IPL. He missed the 2026 season due to a calf and thumb injury. Not only that, the 44-year-old has been struggling with a chronic knee injury, which limits his contribution on the field.
CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad shared an update on Dhoni’s future, saying the legend will make a decision before the 2027 season. For now, the franchise owners and the management are clueless about his next step.
While CSK fans’ emotions are deeply attached to Dhoni due to past glory, carrying him around for long would only hinder the franchise’s growth, as every era must end for good.
