Mohammed Shami just pulled off a stunner to squash all age-related concerns. Aged 36 and fighting his way back into the national squad, the legendary fast bowler picked up five wickets for the East Zone team in the first semifinal of the 2026 Duleep Trophy against the Central Zone.
Shami scalped three of those wickets in the second Central Zone innings, which included a sensational caught-and-bowled to dismiss a well-set Harsh Dubey.

Mohammed Shami just snared one of the best caught-and-bowled in recent memory, doing so against the Central Zone in the first semifinal of the 2026 Duleep Trophy season at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground 1 in Bengaluru.
Bowling the 46th over of the second Central Zone innings on Day 3 of the match on Tuesday, September 1, the 36-year-old fired down a yorker to a well-set Harsh Dubey, who was batting at 24* off 50 balls at the time.

Dubey ended up chipping the ball back towards Shami, who instinctively stuck out his right hand near his feet and held on to the ball, showcasing his incredible reflexes and athleticism despite being 36 years old.

With the catch, Mohammed Shami completed impressive figures of 3-56 in the innings to claim five wickets for the match. His spell helped the East Zone cricket team bundle out the Central Zone for just 158 runs in 50.2 overs on Day 3.
Mohammed Shami continues prolific run in domestic cricket
Currently out of contention of Team India squad, Shami has been wreaking havoc in domestic cricket, particularly for the Bengal cricket team.
In last year’s 50-overs Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-2026, the speedster picked up 15 wickets in just seven innings at an impressive bowling average of 24.53. The senior fast bowler also scalped 16 wickets in just seven matches for Bengal at the 2025-26 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy at 14.93.
In the recently-concluded Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season, Shami snared 37 wickets in just 13 innings spanning seven matches at an average of 16.72. The ageing warhorse finished the tournament as its sixth most successful bowler.
While Shami underwent a below-par IPL 2026 season for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) franchise this year, his impressive performances in domestic cricket have once again underlined his credentials and kept him firmly in contention for a return to the Indian team.
When was the last time Shami played for India?
Mohammed Shami was part of the Indian team that lifted the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Dubai last year. However, the cricketer has been included in any national squad since then.
Shami also played the T20I series against England at home last year, however, he was selected in the team only to get some game-time before the Champions Trophy as he was returning to the team after an extensive injury lay off.
He was India’s best bowler of the 2023 ICC World Cup at home, and has so far collected 462 wickets across all formats for the national side.
