The Sydney Sixers faced a major scare after their marquee fast bowler Mitchell Starc suffered a worrying injury while fielding during Tuesday evening’s Qualifier against the Perth Scorchers at Optus Stadium.

Mitchell Starc, who has been a key presence for the Sydney Sixers, returned to the Big Bash League after a successful Ashes 2025–26 series. In his three BBL appearances this season, he picked up seven wickets, including best figures of 4/35 against the Brisbane Heat in a group-stage match.

However, despite his strong performances, the injury scare during the Qualifier now threatens the Sixers’ campaign.

How was Mitchell Starc injured?

During the third over of the Perth Scorchers’ innings, Starc, stationed deep near the boundary, lunged to his left while attempting a catch at midwicket.

The attempt proved unsuccessful, and he landed awkwardly, immediately clutching his left shoulder in visible pain. His discomfort was evident as he lay on the ground before eventually getting back on his feet. Starc spent several minutes stretching and massaging his shoulder after the incident.

At 35, Starc remains one of the most important pace weapons for every team he represents. Although his shoulder appeared troubling, he later offered reassurance.

Starc assures of his minor injury

Speaking to the media after the match, Starc said he was fine. He went on to bowl and finished with figures of 2/32, brushing aside concerns during the innings break. Speaking to Fox Cricket, Starc explained that he had “just stretched a muscle a bit” and felt alright.

“I’m alright, just stretched it a bit. Old boy’s not moving as quick as I was ten years ago,” Mitchell Starc said.

However, concerns were amplified by Sixers captain Moises Henriques, who admitted he had some doubts about Starc’s fitness. Speaking to reporters after the match, Henriques noted that such injuries can worsen over time.

“Sometimes with these types of injuries, they can get worse once you cool down. So we’re kind of hoping that’s not the case, but we’ll see. He’s been magnificent for us. Like his attitude around the group’s fantastic, and he wants to play, so I’m hoping he’s good,” Moises said.

Despite this, he remained optimistic and hopeful that Starc would be available for the Challenger match. Praising Starc’s commitment, Henriques highlighted his “work ethic” and described him as an “absolute beast.”

“He’s an absolute beast. If anyone can do it, it’s going to be him. But we don’t want to put him at risk for his future commitments. At the moment, I know he’ll be wanting to play,” Moises added.

How long before Mitchell Starc appears in the next format?

Notably, Mitchell Starc will not be part of the T20 World Cup 2026, having retired from the format last year. However, he remains a crucial figure for the Delhi Capitals ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League season.

With the IPL scheduled for March 2026, Starc has sufficient time to recover, even if the shoulder issue proves more serious.

For the unaware, the Australian speedster also boasts an impressive BBL record. In just 13 matches, Starc has taken 27 wickets at an outstanding average of 14.62. He has maintained an economy rate of 7.97 while striking at a remarkable 11.00, underlining his value whenever he takes the field.
