Former Australian head coach Justin Langer has suddenly crashed out of the England Head Coach job. England's search for a new Test head coach has taken another interesting turn following Brendon McCullum's departure.
Ever since the ECB decided to move on from McCullum after England's disappointing run in red-ball cricket, several high-profile names have been linked with the vacancy.
Former India head coaches Ravi Shastri and Rahul Dravid were among the early names discussed before reports confirmed that both were out of contention. Later, Australia's World Cup-winning coach Justin Langer also emerged as a strong contender for the role.
However, the latest developments suggest that the ECB could now head in a completely different direction, with former Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott and Glamorgan coach Richard Dawson emerging as the leading candidates to replace McCullum.
Jonathan Trott Emerges As Front-Runner; Justin Langer Not Under Consideration
Justin Langer's name gained momentum over the past week after Andy Flower ruled himself out of the race due to concerns over balancing England duties with his IPL commitments.
However, according to the latest report, Langer is not among the candidates currently being considered by the ECB.
It is understood that England began the first round of interviews on Tuesday, with Langer not featuring on the shortlisted list as the board looks to narrow down McCullum's successor.
Instead, former England batter Jonathan Trott has emerged as one of the strongest contenders for the role.
Trott built an impressive coaching reputation during his stint with Afghanistan, guiding the side to the semi-finals of the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. He stepped down from the role in February and is understood to have already held discussions with the ECB regarding the vacant Test coaching position.
Langer, despite winning the 2021 T20 World Cup as Australia's head coach and initially being viewed as a serious overseas candidate, appears to have slipped out of contention at this stage.

Richard Dawson Also In Strong Contention
Another leading candidate is Richard Dawson, who has enjoyed an impressive coaching journey over the past few years.
Dawson guided Glamorgan to promotion last season after leaving England's white-ball setup when McCullum took charge across all formats.
Despite moving to county cricket, he remained closely associated with England through the Lions programme, working alongside Andrew Flintoff during last winter's Australia tour.
One major advantage in Dawson's favour is his immediate availability. Unlike several overseas candidates, Glamorgan are reportedly willing to release him straight away, allowing the ECB to appoint him before England's upcoming Test series against Pakistan if required.
Stephen Fleming, Tom Moody Remain Overseas Options
Although Trott and Dawson currently appear to be leading the race, England have not completely ruled out appointing an overseas coach.
Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming remains an attractive option if the ECB decide to look outside England. Fleming recently ended his long association with Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, making him available for a full-time international coaching role.
His close relationship with Brendon McCullum could help ensure continuity between England's Test and white-ball setups. Former Australia all-rounder Tom Moody has also been mentioned as another overseas alternative during the recruitment process.
However, Fleming's close association with McCullum could also work against him, with England reportedly looking to move away from the previous coaching regime and establish a fresh direction for the Test side.
ECB Eye Quick Appointment Ahead Of Pakistan Series
England are aiming to appoint their new Test head coach before the opening Test against Pakistan, which begins on August 19. However, the ECB are reportedly prepared to delay the appointment if their preferred candidate is unavailable immediately.
In that scenario, former England opener Marcus Trescothick is expected to take charge as interim head coach until the permanent appointment is finalised.
With interviews now underway and the shortlist gradually narrowing, the race to replace Brendon McCullum has entered its decisive phase.
While Justin Langer has surprisingly fallen out of contention despite his World Cup-winning credentials, Jonathan Trott and Richard Dawson currently appear to be leading the battle to become England's next Test head coach.
