India's disastrous tour of the United Kingdom has left the team management with plenty of questions to answer ahead of the next assignment. The Men in Blue suffered a shocking 2-0 T20I series defeat against Ireland before enduring a humiliating 4-0 whitewash against England, exposing glaring weaknesses in both the batting and bowling departments.
With the T20 World Cup 2028 cycle already underway, competition for places has intensified inside the Indian dressing room. Several players have failed to capitalise on the opportunities handed to them, while others are now pushing strongly for selection after impressive IPL performances.
Several Indian players on make or break radar
As India prepare to take on Zimbabwe, the series could become a make-or-break opportunity for a few members of the current squad.
A strong performance against Zimbabwe could help them regain the confidence of Gautam Gambhir and the BCCI selection committee. Another disappointing outing, however, could see them slip further down the pecking order ahead of future T20I assignments.
1. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi entered the UK tour carrying enormous expectations after enjoying a dream IPL 2026 campaign. The teenage sensation was expected to dominate attacks with his fearless batting, but things never went according to plan.
He did not receive an opportunity during the Ireland series and managed only 42 runs in three T20I innings against England, averaging just 14 despite maintaining a strike rate of 168. His scores of 14, 13 and 15 summed up an underwhelming tour for the youngster.
Sooryavanshi built his reputation by dismantling bowling attacks in the IPL. However, his aggressive approach failed to deliver against higher-quality international bowling attacks in England.
The Zimbabwe series now presents the perfect opportunity for him to justify the hype surrounding his talent. If he manages to produce impactful performances, the youngster can once again establish himself as one of India's brightest T20 prospects.
2. Rinku Singh
Rinku Singh finds himself in a difficult phase of his international career despite being one of India's most reliable finishers over the last few years.
Unlike many of his competitors, Rinku offers value primarily as a specialist batter. However, the current Indian team management has shown a clear preference for multi-dimensional cricketers capable of contributing with both bat and ball, making his place in the playing XI far from certain.
His recent returns have also failed to strengthen his case. During IPL 2026, Rinku managed scores of 0, 9* and 49* in his last few outings.
If Rinku gets a chance against Zimbabwe, he simply has to make the opportunity count. A few impactful finishing knocks could remind the selectors why a specialist finisher still holds immense value in T20 cricket, even in an era increasingly dominated by all-rounders.

3. Ishan Kishan
Ishan Kishan looked like one of India's biggest positives before the UK tour. The wicketkeeper-batter impressed in domestic cricket and carried that momentum into the T20 World Cup 2026, earning plenty of praise for his aggressive strokeplay.
However, since the IPL ended, Kishan's form has dipped considerably. Across seven matches on the UK tour, he managed only 135 runs at an average of 19.28. Although he played a fighting knock of 56 during the final England T20I, his overall consistency remained a concern.
His recent scores of 13, 4, 56, 1 and 14 perfectly reflect his fluctuating form throughout the tour. Ishan still remains one of India's most destructive wicketkeeper-batters. However, if he wishes to stay in the BCCI's plans for the T20I setup, he needs to rediscover the consistency that earned him his comeback in the first place.
4. Prince Yadav
Prince Yadav earned his India call-up after an outstanding IPL 2026 season with Lucknow Super Giants, where his disciplined hard-length bowling and ability to extract bounce made him one of the tournament's biggest discoveries.
The tall fast bowler justified his selection initially by picking up three wickets on his T20I debut against Ireland before following it up with another impressive spell of 2/30 against England.
However, his momentum faded quickly afterwards. Prince failed to pick up a wicket in his last two T20Is against England before managing just one wicket while conceding 79 runs in the Lord's ODI.
Overall, he claimed five wickets in four matches on the UK tour, but his recent performances suggest that opposition batters have started reading him better.
Zimbabwe offers Prince Yadav an excellent opportunity to prove that his IPL success was no fluke. Another impressive series could help him cement his place in India's fast-bowling plans for the future.
5. Shivam Dube
Among all the players in the current squad, Shivam Dube perhaps has the most to prove. The left-handed all-rounder remains one of India's most valuable pace-bowling all-round options, but his recent performances have failed to justify that reputation.
Across seven matches on the UK tour, Dube scored only 130 runs at an average of 21.66 while picking up five wickets.
His recent performances paint an even more worrying picture. Against England, he registered scores of 2, 22, 14 and 0. Although he contributed with figures of 2/22, 1/27 and 1/32 in different matches, he has struggled to influence games consistently with either discipline.
India expect Dube to provide explosive finishing with the bat while also delivering crucial overs as the fourth seamer. At present, he has been unable to perform either role effectively.
With Nitish Kumar Reddy expected to return from injury in the coming months, Dube knows another poor series could significantly weaken his chances of remaining India's first-choice fast-bowling all-rounder.
