The Jay Shah-led ICC has handed two major sanctions to the Pakistan team amid the tense environment in the Asian cricket fraternity following the Indian team's refusal to collect the Women's Asia Cup 2026 trophy from Mohsin Naqvi. 

On September 13, Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian team defeated their Sri Lankan counterparts to clinch the Women's Asia Cup 2026 title. However, as it was done by the men's team in 2025, the Women's side also refused to collect the winning trophy from ACC chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who also serves as the Interior Minister in the Pakistani government. 

As the tussle between the BCCI and the ACC continues, Jay Shah's ICC has penalised Pakistan men's team for a major misconduct in the third Test against England at Edgbaston. 

ICC sanctions Pakistan players for slow over rate in 3rd Test vs England

On September 14, the ICC announced heavy sanctions for Pakistan for a slow over rate offence in the third and final Test against England at Edgbaston. 

Notably, Pakistan fell eleven overs short of their target within the stipulated time. The Babar Azam-led team was found guilty of violating Article 2.2 of the ICC code of conduct, which relates to minimum over rate offences.

According to the ICC rules, the players from the team with a slow over rate are fined five per cent per over in such cases. As Pakistan were eleven overs short, their penalisation was capped at the maximum limit of 50 per cent for each team member.

Pakistan's slow over rate in the Edgbaston Test also resulted in a massive slash in their WTC points. 

According to Article 16.11.2 of the ICC WTC playing conditions, a team undergoes a one-point deduction for each over short in a particular match in the cycle. 

Therefore, the Babar Azam-led Pakistani team lost eleven points. They are currently placed at the bottom of the WTC points table with an abysmal PCT of 4.63, the lowest among nine participating teams in the 2025-27 cycle.

As evidenced by the data presented in the above table, Pakistan have steadily regressed as a Test side in the World Test Championship. The inaugural edition of the tournament witnessed their best version in the competition, as they finished 6th with a PCT of 43.3. 

However, inconsistent returns from key players, including Babar Azam, and the PCB's mismanagement resulted in their drastic fall in the subsequent cycles. Although the Pakistani team finished ninth on the WTC table in the 2023-25 cycle, they have hit a new low with regard to their PCT in the ongoing edition. 

Babar Azam's men recently went down to England, conceding a humiliating 3-0 whitewash in the Test series. They must win their remaining four Tests, two each against Sri Lanka and New Zealand, to go past their previous lowest of 27.98 PCT. 

But given their abysmal current form, Pakistan are on the verge of registering their lowest PCT across WTC tournaments.
