In a significant development, Sunrisers Hyderabad have dealt a heavy blow as their regular skipper Pat Cummins is likely to skip next year’s IPL. The Men in Orange had a great run in the recently concluded edition, where they crashed out of the competition in the eliminator.
It was a gruelling two months of non-stop cricket, and despite a year left in the IPL 2027 season, SRH captain Pat Cummins has already hinted that he might not be there next season to prioritise international cricket.
Pat Cummins Likely To Skip IPL 2027
In the latest developments, Pat Cummins, at an event, confirmed that he will prioritise the Ashes and the ODI World Cup next year, emphasising that franchise cricket might take a back seat. Australia cricketers are known for giving up on T20 contracts to be fully fit for Tests and ODI events.
Hence, next year, there is Ashes in England and ODI World Cup in South Africa, which is why the Australia captain might not play IPL 2027 to manage his workload and to be in his best of health for the two important events.
“Something has got to give at some stage next year, and it’s not going to be Test matches or an ODI World Cup,” Cummins, an Amazon Prime Video ambassador ahead of the women’s T20 World Cup, told this masthead.

“I will make a call a lot closer and work with the franchise to see what makes sense. Things can change. I’ve had a couple of injuries pop up, so I don’t really want to lock in anything. The priorities for me are always the Test matches and that ODI World Cup. I dare say if I play all of India, I need some sort of break before a pretty gruelling Ashes series,” he added.
Ishan Kishan Likely To Be Named SRH Captain Permanently
Pat Cummins not being available won’t be a new headache for SRH because the franchise dealt with the same issue at the start of IPL 2026. For the unversed, Cummins was not available for first-half of IPL 2026 because of a back injury.
In his absence, Ishan Kishan led the franchise and did pretty well as a captain. The southpaw led the Men in Orange in 8 matches, winning 5 games and facing defeat in three matches. Therefore, it is very much possible that the franchise might appoint Ishan as the permanent captain for IPL 2027.
The positive thing with Ishan Kishan as a leader is that his batting didn’t got affected by the pressure of leading the franchise. The southpaw amassed 602 runs in the entire season, out of which 312 runs came while leading the side.
Pat Cummins Registered A Poor IPL Season
Talking about Pat Cummins, he had a poor IPL 2026, and it appeared that he was not fully fit and still tired. He took 8 wickets in 8 innings and bowled with an economy of 9.59. Cummins had a strike rate of 24, which is very high for a bowler of his calibre.
Hence, all signs hint that the right-arm seamer will skip IPL 2027 because the Ashes will be around June, July, which is right after the IPL.
