Team India made lightwork of New Zealand’s monumental 200-plus total in the second T20I to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. Ishan Kishan and captain Suryakumar Yadav brought down the thunder for the hosts with fiery half-centuries.
Here, we take a look at the entire highlights from the second T20I of the five-match series between India and New Zealand, as it panned out at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur on Friday, January 23.
Rachin Ravindra, Santner punish ragged India to mount 208-6
New Zealand openers Devon Conway and Tim Seifert went slam-bang from the outset, with both cricketers taking a special liking to India’s T20I pace wizard Arshdeep Singh. Arshdeep’s opening over of the match got taken apart for 18 runs, and his other for another 18 as the speedster leaked 36 runs off his first two overs inside the powerplay.
Harshit Rana eventually delivered the first breakthrough for India with the wicket of Conway for 19 off nine balls in the fourth over. Seifert also got holed out by Ishan Kishan off ace spinner Varun Chakravarthy the following over as New Zealand slipped from 43-0 to 43-2.
Kuldeep Yadav was the only shining star with the ball
Rachin Ravindra at number three compiled 44 from 26 balls with two fours and four sixes and shared a swift 55-run partnership with Glenn Phillips for the third wicket. While Phillips got bested by Kuldeep Yadav around the halfway stage of the innings for 19 off 13 balls, Ravindra carried on with another brisk stand with Daryl Mitchell (18 off 11).
Mark Chapman chipped in with a sluggish 10, but captain Mitchell Santner orchestrated New Zealand’s slog-overs fury with a whirlwind 27-ball 47*. Zak Foulkes blasted two fours and a six in his eight-ball 15* to storm New Zealand to 208-6 in 20 overs.
For India, bowlers Hardik Pandya (1-25), Harshit Rana (1-35), Varun Chakravarthy (1-35) and Shivam Dube (1-7) all chipped in with a wicket each. Kuldeep Yadav struck twice in the high-scoring innings to claim figures of 2-35.
Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav blaze India to record win
Indian opener Sanju Samson once again failed to justify his return at the top as the cricketer was dismissed by New Zealand paceman Matt Henry (1-41) in the first over for just six from five balls. His partner Abhishek Sharma also got toppled by Jacob Duffy (1-38) for a rare first-ball duck.
Tottering at 6-2 in a chase of 209, comeback man Ishan Kishan and struggling skipper Suryakumar Yadav both found themselves among the runs again as the two cricketers shared a match-defining 122-run stand for the third wicket. Kishan clattered 11 fours and four huge sixes in his 32-ball counterattacking knock of 76 runs.
While Ishan Kishan mistimed one off Ish Sodhi (1-34) at 128-3, Suryakumar Yadav raged on with another 81-run partnership with Shivam Dube (36* off 18). Suryakumar slapped 82* runs from 37 balls with nine boundaries and four maximums. Dube notched up the winning runs for Team India in just 15.2 overs with seven wickets to spare as the Indian team went 2-0 up in the five-match series.
