Virat Kohli is likely to reverse his retirement and make his return to Test cricket, as per a sensational recent report. While there have been discussions regarding the possibility, a final call will likely be made after the conclusion of the upcoming 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.

It is worth noting that Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket last year, mere days prior to India’s high-profile five-match tour of England. With Rohit Sharma also confirming his Test exit around the same period, Shubman Gill was appointed as India’s new Test captain going forward.

Virat Kohli to make his Test return, discussions active

A sensational recent report claims that former Indian captain Virat Kohli might make his return to Test cricket soon, thus nullifying the retirement decision he made last year. The report further claimed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will likely be making a request to the cricketer regarding the same.

As stated by prominent YouTuber Rohit Juglan, there have been discussions over the possibility of Kohli returning to the format.

The legendary Indian cricketer announced his retirement after undergoing one of the worst phases of his Test career. In his final Test series before retirement in Australia, Kohli aggregated just 190 runs in nine innings at a substandard average of 23.75. Notably, Kohli listed 100* of those runs in a single innings of the series-opener at the Optus Stadium in Perth.

With Virat Kohli in the team, India also lost its preceding home Test series against New Zealand by a historic 0-3 margin. Both he and then captain Rohit Sharma notched up just two fifty-plus scores between them in 12 innings of the series.

Virat Kohli completing 10,000 runs on the cards

If Virat Kohli eventually reverses his retirement from Test cricket, the legendary Indian batter might well complete 10,000 runs in his career. The cricketer confirmed his retirement back in mid-2025 with a tally of 9,230 runs in 210 innings spanning 123 Tests at an average of 46.85. He listed 30 hundreds and 31 half-centuries throughout his 14-year journey.

As of now, Virat Kohli is only playing ODI cricket for Team India, considering he also made his T20I exit a couple of years ago after winning the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup in the West Indies.

Last year, several reports claimed that Kohli is eyeing to play ODIs for India until the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup in South Africa next year.

Quite recently, the cricketer plundered two hundreds against South Africa at home, and anchored India’s 2-1 win in the series. After achieving the number one ranking in ODI batting charts, Kohli slapped another 124 in the series-deciding third ODI match against New Zealand at Indore’s Holkar Stadium last week.

In the meantime, the 37-year-old will soon be seen reprising his role for the RCB franchise in the upcoming IPL 2026 season.
