India captain Suryakumar Yadav endured a disappointing outing as the Mumbai Indians suffered a 27-run defeat against the Rajasthan Royals at Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati on April 7.

The match was reduced to just 11 overs per side due to rain interruptions, turning it into a fast-paced contest. Batting first, the Rajasthan Royals made full use of the conditions and posted a commanding total of 150/3. In response, the Mumbai Indians struggled from the very beginning and could only manage 123/9.

Suryakumar Yadav, one of MI's most reliable batters, failed to deliver and departed after making just six runs off three balls. His early dismissal, followed by an aggressive celebration from RR pacer Nandre Burger, became one of the most talked-about moments of the match.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi guide RR

Rajasthan Royals got off to a flying start thanks to a sensational opening partnership between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The duo attacked the Mumbai bowlers right from the first over, taking advantage of the wet conditions.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi smashed a quick 39 off just 14 balls, while Yashasvi Jaiswal played a brilliant unbeaten knock of 77 off 32 deliveries. Their 80-run partnership in just 30 balls put MI under immense pressure early in the game.

Jaiswal was especially aggressive, scoring 22 runs in the opening over against Deepak Chahar. Later, captain Riyan Parag added a quick 20 off 10 balls to further boost the total.

MI fail to control momentum

Chasing 151 in just 11 overs was always going to be tough, and the Mumbai Indians never really got going. The top order collapsed early, with Ryan Rickelton, Rohit Sharma, and Suryakumar Yadav all falling cheaply.

RR's bowling attack, led by Sandeep Sharma, kept things tight and did not allow MI batters to play freely.

Captain Hardik Pandya also failed to accelerate the scoring, while wickets kept falling at regular intervals. Sherfane Rutherford provided a brief spark with a quick 25 off 8 balls, but it was not enough.

Bowlers like Nandre Burger, Sandeep Sharma, and Ravi Bishnoi shared the wickets and ensured MI never came close to the target.

Nandre Burger's aggressive send-off to Suryakumar Yadav

One of the most interesting moments of the match came when Nandre Burger dismissed Suryakumar Yadav early in the innings. Bowling a short-of-length delivery, Nandre Burger forced SKY into a mistimed shot, which was safely caught by Jofra Archer in the deep.

What followed grabbed everyone's attention. Burger stared directly at Suryakumar Yadav, pumped his fist, and let out a loud roar in celebration. The aggressive send-off clearly showed how crucial the wicket was for the Rajasthan Royals.

The dismissal came at a critical stage and pushed MI further on the back foot.

It is important to note that the Mumbai Indians started the IPL 2026 with a 6-wicket win against the Kolkata Knight Riders; however, after the first match, it seems the Mumbai-based franchise has lost momentum, losing two consecutive matches against the Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals.

Hardik Pandya and co will next face the defending champions, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, on April 12, 2026.
