The first Test of the two-match series between India and hosts Sri Lanka is on the brink of a thrilling conclusion at the Galle International Stadium. With Team India inching towards a comprehensive victory, a spirited performance from Sri Lanka can also yield a fighting draw in favour of the hosts.

Moreover, with 288 runs still required, Sri Lanka can also entertain chances of an unlikely win should they play out the first two sessions without much damage.

With all three results possible going into the final day, it turns out that even weather gods could have a significant say in determining the outcome of this closely fought Test.

Here, we determine how the weather is going to play out in Galle on Day 5 of India vs Sri Lanka first Test match.

As things stand, rains might play spoilsport on the final day of the first India vs Sri Lanka Test match in Galle.

With a strong 75% possibility of rainfall in the morning, there is a chance that the opening session might be washed away without any overs. However, weather forecasts also indicate improved weather conditions in the afternoon, with the probability of precipitation reading only 25%.

Indian bowlers will be hoping to have a crack at Sri Lankan batters for at least 45 overs, if not 60, of the overall 98 overs of play available in the match.

How can rain impact Day 5 based on current scenario?

By stumps on Day 4, Sri Lanka lost each of its top four batters to reach 84-4 in 34 overs. Chasing 372 runs for a win and still 288 runs away from their target, it is safe to assume that the hosts will be aiming to bat out a draw before any miracle partnership can entertain their chances of an unlikely win.

With a strong rain threat hovering around the Galle International Stadium for at least the morning session of Day 5, Sri Lankan batters will be hoping that rains wash away as many overs as possible in a bid to preserve their remaining six wickets.

For India, six perfect deliveries is all they need to go 1-0 up in the two-match Test series. All in all, the weather could prove to be the biggest hurdle standing between India and a series-opening victory in Galle.

How can India qualify for WTC 2027 final if Galle Test ends in a draw?

So far, the ongoing India vs Sri Lanka first Test has lost as many as roughly 80 overs to rain after four days of action in Galle.

A rain-curtailed Day 5 might well enforce a draw between the two sides to deny Team India its well-deserved victory.

If the match indeed ends in a draw, the race for securing a place in the WTC 2025-27 final will get infinitely much tougher for the tourists. With Bangladesh defeating Australia in Darwin, it is imperative for the ‘Men in Blue’ to win each of their remaining Test matches on offer in the current WTC cycle.
