In a significant development, legendary South African cricketer Faf du Plessis has completed his maiden IPL commentary stint. The seasoned campaigner had withdrawn his name from the IPL 2026 auction list and later returned to the tournament as a commentator.

Faf du Plessis was a pivotal member of the Chennai Super Kings squad, which clinched multiple IPL titles in MS Dhoni's leadership. Later, he captained the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and eventually joined the Delhi Capitals for a brief stint.

However, his inconsistent returns in IPL 2025 prompted Faf du Plessis to skip the IPL 2026 mini auction. However, the 41-year-old later joined the commentary box, making a surprising comeback to the showpiece event.

Faf du Plessis IPL career at a glance

Hailed for his scintillating stroke-play as a top-order batter, Faf du Plessis joined the MS Dhoni-led CSK franchise in 2012. His dynamic batting style and athletic fielding established Du Plessis as one of the most successful overseas players in IPL history.

He went on to play for Rising Pune Super Giants when the BCCI banned CSK for two years following the infamous spot-fixing scandal.

He made a grand return to the CSK camp in 2018 and remained associated with the franchise till 2021 before being roped in by Royal Challengers Bengaluru ahead of the 2022 season.

Faf du Plessis is a two-time IPL winner for CSK, having been a part of their title-winning squad in the 2018 and 2021 editions.

Overall, Du Plessis has featured in 154 IPL matches, scoring 4773 runs at an average of 35.10 and a strike rate of 135.79.

He was particularly successful for the Chennai-based franchise, amassing 2721 runs across 86 innings at an average of 35.34 and a strike rate of 131.45. Du Plessis was the captain of RCB from 2022 to 2024, leading them to 21 wins across 42 IPL matches.

Where will Faf du Plessis play?

The South African great didn't specify which tournament he would participate in after signing off from the IPL.

Considering he is no longer in contention for a spot in international cricket, Du Plessis might be aiming for a cricketing comeback through either domestic cricket or franchise leagues.

It's worth mentioning that the former RCB captain can't enter the IPL 2026 player as a replacement because he hadn't registered for the mini auction last year.
