Recently, a video of Shashi Tharoor, an Indian politician and former diplomat and bureaucrat who is currently serving as a fourth-term Member of Parliament for Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, went viral on social media.
The video allegedly showed Shashi Tharoor praising the Pakistan Cricket Board and the Pakistan government for taking a strong stance against the International Cricket Council.
Pakistan’s Boycott And The Fallout
For the unaware, the Pakistan government announced a boycott against India on February 1 through their social media handle, declaring that they would not take the field in the much-anticipated February 15 clash in Colombo at the T20 World Cup 2026.
The post immediately went viral, throwing the cricketing world into chaos. The matter was later resolved through a tripartite meeting between the ICC, the Pakistan Cricket Board, and the Bangladesh Cricket Board. However, debates and criticisms continue to circulate across the internet.
Given the scale of controversy that Pakistan created by boycotting the India match as a sign of protest against Bangladesh’s ouster from the T20 World Cup 2026, many cricket experts as well as cricket connoisseurs commented on the stance taken by Pakistan.

A video posted by Zahid Ghiskori on his Twitter account, which garnered almost 125.8k views, was called out by Shashi Tharoor himself on his official social media handle. In the video posted on Zahid’s Twitter account, Tharoor appeared to be praising Pakistan for their diplomatic as well as moral stance.
“I believe the way Pakistan handled the situation was truly brilliant. I’m not sure what they will do on the field, but diplomatically, they were outstanding. The Indian cricket board was completely cornered—no doubt about it.
This shows that strong diplomacy can make even a weaker nation appear like a Goliath. Pakistan has achieved that, and I genuinely appreciate them for it. It’s remarkable,” Shashi Tharoor’s AI generated video was seen uttering these words.
Tharoor Calls Video 'AI-Generated Fake'
However, nearly 22 hours after the video began circulating on social media, Shashi Tharoor broke his silence by retweeting the post and calling it a fake AI-generated video.
On his Twitter handle, Shashi Tharoor wrote, “AI-generated fake news and not even very good, neither my language nor my voice.”
Indeed, it was a fake video, as there were clear issues with lip sync. A visible mismatch between the audio and lip movements was noticeable throughout the video, in which Shashi Tharoor appeared to be giving an interview from his car.
While Shashi Tharoor has often been vocal about his views on Indian cricket and world cricket overall, and is known to be a cricket connoisseur himself, the video circulating on social media is completely fake, as confirmed by Tharoor calling it out himself.
